BBC TV Series (Aviation Related)

Ok i don’t know if there’s already a thread for this but i was thinking. Why don’t the BBC show some of there old aviation programmes like Reaching for the Skies, Fighter Pilot and Test Pilot? It would boost the ratings a bit and it would be nice to get them on DVD.

Just a thought!

The reason behind it is that the BBC did some amazing series in the eighties. I’ve only seen snipets of Fighter Pilot (i’ve got the book though) and Test Pilot on Youtube, my grandad has three episodes of Reaching for the skies on video. I think BBC 4 would be a better channel to show stuff like this.
And another series that i’d like to see again (this time on Channel 4) would be Classic Aircraft. I’ve got five episodes (i don’t know how many were made).:D

My favourite was a BBC one off called the ‘600 mph Men’, best docu I’ve ever seen about British post-war aviation, be great to get it on DVD.

Here’s another one this time on Channel 4 (i think) I was three
(puts it at 1993) when it was shown and it was about F-14’s (i think from VF-84) it was a documentary but i’ve no clue other than i can remember a shot of a two Tomcats flying next to a snow capped mountain.

The show I would like to see come back was one that was on BBC2, it was called The Air show and presented by Julian Tutt. They have the perfect presenter to bring it back now in James May.

Because it is easier to put crap on and that dumbs down everything for the masses, viewing figures seem to be god.
Not enough people interested in an old specialist subject.
I will give them credit though for their Empire of the seas with Dan Snow

I remember that one too. IIRC it was also presented by the rather lovely Hazel Irvine. I remember the ‘Test Pilot’ series too, I think I my have it on VHS somewhere.

I would love to see the ‘Perpetual Motion’ series repeated. They told the stories of allsorts of different machines like the Moggy Minor and the Blackpool Tram. It was narrated by Warren Clarke. One of my favourites was a show about the Shackleton shown shortly before they retired in ’91

Here’s another one this time on Channel 4 (i think) I was three

There was a show repeated recently on History channel called Jetstream following a group of RCAF pilots learning to fly the CF/A18 Hornets at Cold Lake

Don’t think it as a series but a one of episode of the Science type show QED.

It appeared to be a single nonstop view of the UK coastline from a camera mounted on a Hawk I think….the stinger at the end as they explained how they did it, was that it was a rear facing camera and the footage was being show in rewind.

Absolutely!! My sentiments entirely – Who would like to see that French Mirage pilot series – over here we called it the AERONAUTS but the French called it LES CHEVALLIERS DU CIEL.

There are about 3 stingy clips of it on Youtube?

It will have a difference….!

The Luftwaffe wins, to keep it PC or Gordon Brown apologises for the RAF’s role in the battle ?

Look out for a Battle of Britain three-part documentary on BBC1 this Spring/Summer to mark the 70th anniversary.

It will have a difference….!

More when I can.

Yes it was just an easy way of keeping the camera lens free from bugs etc 😉

It’ll probably end in denial.

Just dug out ‘Test Pilot’, someone burnt the 6 episodes from VHS to disc for me, and it’s running on my TV at the moment.

Typical BBC, Underside shot of a Hawk starting to roll down the runway and cuts to rear view of a Phantom in full reheat, Love the theme tune though 😮

Only if they’re in Egypt and fall in.

My coat? Why, thank you.
