Here is the first of many images from today’s celebrations at Duxford, in somewhat overcast conditions the entire fleet took to the air, a feat that hadn’t occurred since the early seventies. A big thank you must go to all the engineering team at Conningsby for enabling today’s event to be be commemorated in such style.
Its just a shame that more of the former crew members of the Historic Aircraft Flight/ BBMF weren’t there to see it.
Septic.

Crew
Well I’m not a great football fan, so had a go at one of the crew photo’s. I went for the rear view of people to keep it anonymous. My software is a bit limited so don’t look too close, but I was quite pleased with the result.

but I for one wouldn’t object in principal to the BBMF operating such an aircraft, and introducing a little gentle enemy tail chasing into their usual routine.
I would not mind the BBMF having a 109 After all they do have a Lancaster and a C-47 that did not take part in the Battle of Britian:confused: 😀 If no 109 I would love to see a Hawker Typhoon flying:cool:

Wasn’t homing Black 6 with the BBMF considered, but rejected as an idea on the grounds that they simply wouldn’t be able to justify having an ‘enemy’ aircraft on the flight?
The article on Black 6 in the “Luftwaffe Eagles” publication mentions that it was deemed “inappropriate” for the flight to operate a former “enemy” aircraft.
C’est la vie!

There would have been no clear or compelling reason to have a 109 on the Memorial Flight . If it was the Luftwaffe Memorial Flight then it would be justified ! As for Hurricanes and going abroad – the vast majority of Hurricanes have actually been brought into the country from Canada and Russia. Of those we have a healthy selection of Canadian examples flying and more on the blocks – we are not in a position where a few Hurricanes going back to in some cases where they were built is in any way detrimental.

re
didnt they used to send pilots to use the Boscombe downe Harvards?
I would guess they have considered obtaining one eventually.

Speaking of the aircraft the BBMF doesn’t have: I was rather surprised when I first learned that they didn’t have any Tiger Moth(s) and/or Harvard(s). Both rather essential types in RAF WWII history, possible to acquire, and easy to maintain.

I expect the BBMF are happy with what they have- indeed, Fluffy and co. are rebuilding another Spit to eventually join the Flight- but a better balance of Hurricanes to go with the Spits would be good, yes.

I don’t know…
I would have thought that both sides have a right to be represented…
Besides, they were the enemy 60 years ago, but Spitfires have since flown alongside 109’s. I think it’ll happen eventually. Let’s hope so!
Anyway, we all agree that those photos are spectacular!!!:D 😀 😀 😀
I remember they wanted to get a 109 in the museum at Manston but there were objections.
I wish the BBMF would obtain another Hurricane. Most of the restored ones tend to end up overseas and the BBMF are the only group unlikely to sell one.

Has anyone got a pic of Black 6 and the German 109, whatever, flying with the Lanc and 2 spits at North Weald, I have it all on video but no pics, it was a sensational moment.

Crew Pictures
Thanks for the comments on the pictures. I did wonder about some modification. The aluminium ladder is probably a bit out of place as well, so there seems to be a lot to clear. Maybe when I’ve got a bit more time.
I was there on Friday as well, and found some time to go round the museum, so I’m still working through all the photos.
Although the trainers are a pain for period photographs I thought it was great that people were allowed around the aircraft, and I was moved by the obvious respect that the helpers had for the veterans.
If any of the BBMF or Lincs Lanc Association read this, then thanks for a great couple of days.

Well, tragically Black 6 is now a silent dust collector at Hendon, so we’ll never know, but I for one wouldn’t object in principal to the BBMF operating such an aircraft, and introducing a little gentle enemy tail chasing into their usual routine.

beautiful
Oh
My
God.
I just joined – this is my first post. This must be the best forum for ‘newbies’ to come into that I have ever seen – ‘cos everyone knows a Spitfire, Lancaster and Hurricane.
I’ll wager the BBMF will eventually get their hands on a 109. Which will be no bad thing…:D

I really like the crew pic. shame about those dam trainers in the backdrop, otherwise it would be timeless.
With all this modern technology, one could airbrush/clone the unwanted bits from this picture if you desired. Only you would know.
I too think those pictures with the re-enactors are good and do round off the mood rather well.
