BBMF Circa 1983 Question?

Hi all;

Just a quick question…

All of my reference material and books are packed away, so I can’t find the answer to this one myself (Google wasn’t much help!)….

What colours were the flight’s aircraft wearing in 1983? I seem to remember that PA474 was wearing the colours of Gibson’s AJ-G, but I’m at a loss for the rest of the flight. Any pointers would be highly appreciated.

TIA;
Steve

The theme of my build will be the 1983 Great Warbirds Air Display. My little tribute to the men and machines of airshows past. (And notice how many of those pilots are no longer with us!)…

1: Grumman Bearcat: Stefan Kawowski
2: Spitfire IX MH434: Ray Hanna
3: Junkers Ju52/Casa 352: John Hawke
4: DC-3: Dizzy Addicot
5: Fairey Flycatcher: John Fairey
6: Pilatus P-2: John Watts
7: P-51D Mustang: Stephen Grey
8: Spitfire XIVe: Spencer Flack
9: B-17G Flying Fortress: Keith Sissons
10: Me108/Nord 1002: Patrick Lindsay
11: N/A Harvard: Gary Numan
12: Piston Provost: G-BKHP
13: BBMF x3
14: Vintage Pair
15: Corsair F4U-7: Patrick Lindsay
16: DH-82 Tiger Moth: Barry Tempest

Odd one out is Gary Numan’s Harvard, as I don’t think he was on the circuit in 83…

Pretty sure he was, as I seem to recall he was at the very first GW at West Malling the year before, as I recall all the black ‘goth’ style Numan fans walking around bedraggled in the deluge of that day.

BBMF 1983

Hi Spade Grip…

The scale will be 1/72, and yep, I already have a few Airfix PRXIX’s in the stash….not a bad kit at all!!

I’m also open to any further suggestions!!

Already got some of the builds underway in what should be a fun project and a bit of a trip down memory lane. I’ll post some pics when I have a few done.

Sorry, this thread has now ended up being in the wrong forum!!

Regards;
Steve

Glad to be of service, when you have finished your modeling project can we have some pix of them?

What scale are you doing? If it’s 1/72 those new Airfix P.R.XIX’s are just the job, the Fujimi ones aren’t bad either if you can find one or two, Evil Bay may be worth a trawl.

Good luck Rich.:D

BBMF 1983…

Hi Spadegrip…

Thanks ever so much for that….that’s just what I was looking for! Reading through the list, I can see them all in my minds eye…it’s just that I couldn’t remember off the top of my head. This is all for a modelling project by the way.

Thanks again…
Steve

Yes, a young Lancman was astonished at seeing the Lanc lose an engine at RAF St Athan in ’83, and immediately land on three right in front of him- the first time he’d seen it land- with AJ-G on the side. Scott Anderson was at the helm I do believe.

PA474 was in Guy Gibson’s AJ-G scheme during 1983.

Spitfires IIa P7350 was SH-D of 64 Sqn,

Vb AB910 was XT-M of 603 Sqn (Richard Hillary),

PR.XIX PM631 was AD-C of 11 Sqn ?
and
PR.XIX PS853 was painted in a PR blue scheme but was grounded.

Hurricanes IIc LF363 was VY-X of 85 Sqn (allover black)
and
IIc PZ865 was ‘Last of the Many’

The flight also operated Devon VP981 in a silver and blue scheme with the legend Battle of Britain Memorial Flight along the fuselage.
