(sorry another Dak question!)
It has been reported that the BBMF Dak is at Coventry “for a service”. What’s it in for? Doesn’t the RAF look after the Dak’s normal maintenance?

Its a big service. Wings off etc. I don’t know why we are doing it and they aren’t though. Money and manpower issues perhaps?
Tom.
Wasn’t it done by the company a few years ago Tom, when it had its last major?
It makes sense to have the UK’S Dakota specialist to do the work I guess.
If anybody books a flight and tour on the 17th December for the Dakota 70th anniversary day, mince pies and sherry included, they will no doubt see the service in progress. 😉

Do they send guys over from the UK to do the US one?
Their UK non-flying frame I think is just volunteers?
Correct.
The flights Chief engineer made two trips to Texas before the show to check it over, I don’t know what work was entailed though.
Maybe a check of oils and make sure the brakes and controls were free and then engine and system checks before taxi test and flight check?
I belive it may be under a care and maintenance contract with CAF engineers as well(?).

Not as far as I know.
They did the rebuild to get it across the Atlantic in the first place, and I think James Foden has gone over a couple of times to supervise stuff.

Atlantique did a good job on the Shackleton. I guess that would put them in the running?

I thought Sally B was maintained by her own team?????

Pretty specialist work. Sheer wild guess, whoever does Sally B. Or Marshall’s. This assumes out-sourcing. No doubt the RAF will find somewhere to do it in-house?

In the same vein. I wonder who will be doing the major services on the BBMF Lanc when DARA St. Athan closes down in the next year or two?
mmitch.

Proably in the same way the the Spitfires and Hurricanes go to specialist organisations for major maintenance.

Ooh, so a C or D check?
I remember being led around the hangars as a sprog when G-AMSV had it’s wings off for a check. I later lost two virgin cherries that day, 1. getting to fly and 2. first case of airsickness 😀
