BBMF Facebook page blocked to non members

I see that the BBMF Facebook page is now being blocked unless you are a registered member. Twice before when it happened, an email to their PRO removed it but not this time. I understood that as the BBMF is publicly funded its Facebook page was free access, or is this now being imposed by Facebook?

Couldn’t you just register with Facebook? Use Ten Minute Mail to use a bogus email address not linked to your actual identity, use a John Smith user name, profile picture of a cat, that sort of thing?

Yep, I did somethings like that .
It was Hangar 11 that unwittingly got me on Facestalk……I mean book. I was fed up not being in the loop on news and unveilings etc so I signed up. As Nige said, it’s a great aviation news tool as is Twitter.

FACEBOOK, the largest cemetery in the world, I will never join it, its become a badge a “oh you can find me on FACEBOOK” I find most of the social media utter rubbish and allows cowards to say anything they want without being held to account.

Just about every museum, aircraft collection, restoration company/vendor, airfield & warbird pilot has a page on there…

When Kelly and Yve set up the page it was open to all, it’s now a closed group due to trolling and other ‘activities’. join the group and it should work.

On my desktop, I use Firefox with No Script (forbidding facebook.com) and AdBlock Plus, the BBMF page appears to act like the default ‘open’ FB page.
That is, nag pop-upon about the bottom third, expands up to bottom two thirds the first time you scroll down a bit, back to bottom third after ‘Not Now’.
The details of how they have done the overlay thing have changed a couple of times over the last several months, presumably as they interact with script blockers and ad blockers.
I notice that if I go directly to a FB photo page on my desktop Firefox, I get ‘Sorry this page is not available’. If I use a different browser, and can see it (with nag pop-up).
If I follow a link from my phone’s Twitter App (not the official one) to the same photo (I think it kind-of uses Chrome for html viewing) I see the photo and comments etc with no nag pop-up.
I appreciate those organisations that auto-post to Twitter (e.g TVAL )when they do a FB photo/post, they appear in my timeline (which is not filtered, unlike FB’s) there.

OS shouldn’t matter, but browser might. Firefox and Chrome allow users to install extensions that block popups, in-page adverts, trailer adds on Youtube and even splash screens used by Pintrest or paywall sites that block content behind overlays etc…

My OP concerned the fact that the BBMF page has been freely available to anyone since it started but is now being blocked.
Is it their choice or is Facebook blocking it?
mmitch.

I agree, I have no problem with people who wish to be members of Facebook, but it seems that those of us who choose not to are being discriminated against, in many cases. In the case of the BBMF Facebook pages, I usually manage to access them by making several attempts, although there is about one third of the page missing. I would imagine that the computer operating system makes no difference, but I use XP home on my desktop & XP Professional on the laptop.
Regards, Rich.

Stop putting down Facebook. I have found sites with photographs and stories that otherwise I would never have seen even on the Internet. Pathfinder squadron photographs kept by families, 8th Air Force images never seen before. don’t knock it until you have tried it.

The group on Facebook has been changed from an open group that anyone can view (and put up adds for sun glasses etc) to a closed group that requires a mod to approve you I recently had to change my small group to closed due to idiots posting rubbish or trying to sell things on it So not surprised others have had to, saves on all the moderation.

I am using the first one. If I click on ‘not now’ It lets me see about one third of the page. I have two PCs one using W7 and the other 10, both behave the same.

As far as I can see, the BBMF fb page is only suffering from the same affliction as most fb pages – a nag screen to try and make those viewing either register with facebook, or sign in. All that is needed is to click ‘Not Now’, and the popup will shrink to the bottom third of the screen, from where it is merely a minor irritation.

I think the big problem that some people have with facebook, is the amount of personal information they seem to require when you register, and subsequently glean from your account if you provide it for them to harvest, and what they do with once it is provided. True, you can try registering with false details, but from what I understand, facebook is getting increasingly adept at sniffing out false identities and terminating them.

I have used Facebook now for a few years. Its great for up to date news on my interests, the RAF, WW2 Aviation and Archaeology. WW2 German resistance, Flight simulation, and the S&D Railway. Off course you can interact and respond to posts of your interest. Who knows someone may ask a question and you may have the answer. Some may say people use it to find out all about you. I don’t think so, like any social media just stick to your subject line. Most groups will delete inappropriate comments and ban the poster so its user friendly really.

There is a huge amount of good stuff on facebook ,it’s up to you to sort the wheat from chaff .Cutting the nose off to spite the face springs to mind.Seriously use facebook for what YOU want it for and it’s fine, yes there are daft bits but you choose.

Agreed. My Wyvern project has its own FB page as does the DH Hornet project and Stirling project etc. Got to move with the times guys ‘n girls 🙂

I used to be the same with FB, but it can come in quite handy.
You can have as many different identities as you like.

On my main page I have just eight “friends”. I dont see the point in
having hundreds of friends I dont know.

You can turn those emails, and all notification emails, off. Getting annoyed at email frequency must be the pinnacle of first world problems. :applause:

You should be so lucky that you have lots of people wanting to be your friend on there. :apologetic:

I have had this argument with people before.

You can set up Facebook in seconds so that only YOU see what you want to see, and only YOU decide who sees what you post.

Facebook is what you make of it… It’s a brilliant news tool…

YIPPY, I can get lots of emails asking me if i know so and so each and every hour
