Thanks, Critter, for your comment. The on-line briefing indicated above is a shortened version of an article that appears in the current issue of Rail Magazine, and is written by Nigel Harris, the editor. His writing is always very direct to the point, and in this instance quite moving.

Interesting indeed.
I shall look out for her next time I’m out near Grantham or Lincoln.

Thanks 91Regal.

years ago i’d have said wow fantastic !! nowadays i’m less than impressed !!

for many reasons

1 train spotting is no longer the hobby it was you are more than likeley going to be arrested for suspision of terrorism nowadays than getting beaten up for being geeky !! in some instanses both on a bad day !!

2 having a name on a loco was once an honour for select things ,, for instace southern steam locomotives like merchant navy , battle of britain and west country class locomotives , amongst them names like , bodmin , winston churchill , tangmere , canadian pacific line
LMS locomotives like bahamas , kolhapur , etc all named after the empire

our local trams nowadays have the odd local name but one company has its name on the nameplates to sell chavs trainers , so it is looked on as advertising space rather than a thing of honour

quite a sad state of affairs that this once very honourable thing will be largely unimportant to the large proportion of british nowadays

i bet 99.9% don’t even look to see if they are named nowadays !!
