With this year being the 50th anniversary of the formation of the BBMF, I thought it might be an idea to have a post showing their aircraft over the years starting with these in no particular order chronologically …

Two airframes that are linked tenuously to the BBMF, first TB382 which has been reduced to component parts for spares recovery…

Second, TE311 which is being rebuilt to fly by the BBMF…

I will be posting more images showing different schemes worn by the various aircraft, there are possibly other forum members with early images that would be of interest to us feel free to join in, all the best, Len Harvey.

Guess I’d better contribute.
Mildenhall…
From a print I bought some years ago. Apart from spotting RR299 the Mosquito in the background (I presume) I’ve no idea where or when. Anyone?
Coningsby, looks like tatershall castle in the background.

Fluffy,
I am puzzled. AB910 with a four blade prop.
Period photographs of AB910 coded MV-T at 53 OTU post July 1944 show the aircraft fitted with a three blade Dowty Rotol broad root assembly. Equally when first ‘civilianized’ as G-AISU circa 1949 it carried the same three blade prop type, carrying this through to the second civilian paint scheme with race number ’82’. By 1950 at Hendon and wearing the same livery, but race number ’40’, a four blade assembly had been fitted, presumably for race performance reasons. This it carried right on through Vickers service, the BoB film and on to the BBMF.

There was a letter from the late Alan Wheeler in Aeroplane (about mid-1980’s) explaining the series of events regarding the engines for AB910 and the purchase of it and AR213. I recall he bought a zero time Merlin in a box for £10 then sold the box on for the same price! I think AR213 cost him £25.00.
I have a copy of it somewhere……
I’ll start looking!

From AB;s log so must be right she also had clipped wings. Also from another log book engine and prop still fitted in 1946 and the airframe had done 855 flying hours.

There are some fantastic photos here, brilliant thread. I really liked seeing the one of both Hurricanes tucked up behind the Lancaster, you don’t seem to see that often.
It is amazing how many schemes these few aircraft have worn, keeping the memory of many long gone wartime aircraft alive. But I wonder if anyone has details of the crews of the original aircraft? Eg, who was the crew of the original Mickey the Moocher, or the original Johnny Walker, etc, and where they were all form, their fates during the war, etc. Has anyone looked into and compiled that historic angle of the BBMF?

Well done BBMF for reaching 50.
Lets hope that it will reach 52. With the MoD considering disbanding the Reds, will the BBMF be next on the endless list of cost saving measures?
If it happens then I will definitely be emigrating!
If they do the do one off there’s 😉 http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/ Nice shots there I see the Chips will be at Duxford for the first time in may for the ann.
