BBMF Lancaster Daft Question Maybe…

Hi;

As the title says, maybe a daft question but…

What is that intake/fairing on the starboard side of the fuselage just above the trailing edge of the wing?

I’m knocking together a kit of PA474 and want to get all of those little details that doesn’t come as standard in the box, i.e: Lincoln tail fins, dual controls etc. Was looking at some photos and must say that I hadn’t noticed that fairing before.

Thanks in advance;
Steve

She also has a non stock tail wheel tyre, a nosewheel tyre from an Airbus A340 IIRC.

Many thanks for the information regarding the intake…much appreciated! It’s funny, but after all those years of seeing 474, it’s the first time I’d noticed it!

Thanks also for the clarification regarding the fins. I’ve already modified those parts of the kit. Does she also have the cable cutters fitted? Can’t quite see on the images I’m pulling up on Google!

Thanks for the replies. 🙂

On the ASR.III and GR/MR.3 Lancasters the intake fed cooling air to the radar equipment in the fuselage.
I think the PR.1s had a similar intake, though unsure if for crew or equipment, they did operate in hot climates, I assume PA474 gained its scoop from the PR days.

Yes that is the air intake for the cabin heating system that supplied heat to the gunners and in some cases H2s radar… There is also another intake in the stbd c section hinged leading edge that provided heat to the forward crew members

I think it was something to do with a cabin heating system..? Not sure on that.

Her tail fins are the later style enlarged pattern used on some batches of Lancs, and have been with her since new.
