BBMF Sickly Spit

I heard from a work colleague that he was in his parents garden, Canberra Close, Coningsby, on Sunday afternoon he thought that one of the BBMF Spits sounded very sick.

“A grey looking Spitfire took off and then at around 100ft started to sound horrible. So much so that I watched it all the way around the circuit until it landed.”

Does anyone have any info?

As my ears were not there I could only ask based upon what someone else heard. I suspect that without Fluffy posting to say that all is well, you would not have had the confidence to speculate that all was well.

I do not know the technical reason why a Merlin or Griffon should sound ‘like a bag of nails’ but look forward to the day when Mark12, Fluffy or someone else explains it.

What I enjoy about aviation and this Forum, is that it doesn’t matter how much I think I know, there are others who know more.

In the pursuit of incresed knowledge I will continue to read this Forum and post occasional quaestions, knowing that I will continue to learn. That makes me a happy Forumite.

I will endeavour to post threads that do not appear to sensationalise a situation.

More than that I cannot add.

😡 To continue my smugness and cynicism-…. yeah whatever

I do not read the forum every day and only picked up on this thread late last night on my steam powered pc that takes an age to download and therefore didnt manage to even get to page 2 of the post. In hindsight I was a little premature in responding but I just thought that I would add my comments before the wrong people pick up on them. I know that members of gutter press trowel these forums looking for stories about nothing and paint a poor picture of warbird maintenance, airshow “disasters”, near misses etc etc. Given the BBMFs recent problems I thought it prudent to add a possible solution to the spits sick sounding engine. My comments were meant in good faith and I thought I was addressing enthusiasts that knew what a throttled back Merlin sounds like.

When you respond to people with personal titles and addresses that refer to merlins, one assumes that that person knows a bit about the subject.

Getting back to the first post, “a sick sounding Spit low in the Coningsby circuit”, EVERY spit sounds sick when its throttled back, downwind in a circuit -its a Merlin and Griffon speciality with all the coughing and spluttering. Are we just jumping to conclusions here and lloking for a non-story??!!

Not at all, and I find your comments very smug and cynical. Had you posted your comments within minutes of the first posting, then fewer people may have speculated. As it happens, you did not and many people did speculate.

I did not ask for speculation, however it was offered. To return your cynicism, it easy to be clever once the issue has been resolved.

This Forum exists because people have questions and others have answers. We cannot all be experts on every subject. I was not at Coningsby on Sunday, but the person that was, felt that what he heard was different to what he thought he remembered from previous visits to his parents. From what Fluffy says, all was well. I am relieved to here that and I am now able to pass the good news back to my colleague.

A simple question with a robust answer from a man in the know.

If you have read my previous posts you may note that, I don’t do speculation. Humour – yes, banter – yes, enlightened discussion- always try, and when I don’t know I either keep quiet or ask an open question.

Now here’s a question to close on.

I’m not trying to create a non-story are you?

Answer not required. Thread closed

Stewart1a

Hang on to the enthusiasm and make the most of every opportunity. I too was in the ATC. Having started as a probationer I managed to get to Flt Lt.

The worlds your oyster. Just try not to be too clever, there are a lot of very knowlegeable people on this Forum and elsewhere on your travels, you will get more from life for contributing what you do know that claiming to know what you can’t say. There are many people that know things that they can’t say, so they say nothing.

Hope the Wing parade goes well.

Fluffy

Many thanks for the info and timely intervention.

[ note to myself – be careful how you ask questions, it can cause people to jump to all manner of curious conclusions. End]

Ok, where to start…..

PS915 returned to base on Sunday afternoon, gear down, throttle back. In this mode the spit sounds ‘like a bag of nails’, they all do. So no problem there then!!

Stewart1a, a little knowledge is dangerous, no knowledge is frightening!
Comments like yours, no matter how well-intended, are misleading, and some of us have more to do with our time than correct the misinformation/rumour mill.

As for saying that Clive Rowley has had a lousy season so far, you forget that we did the D-day celebrations, a huge success, and have also attended many airshows and completed numerous flypasts already. There have been one or two problems which have already been highlighted and discussed on the forum and don’t need resurrecting.

As for the rudder and tailplane in Flypast, that’s the ongoing spares recovery project that, again, has already been debated, discussed and dismissed.

I guess the BBMF Spitfire tailplane at AA will probably be a spare/for TE311 (i.e., it will be a spare, but I suspect it will end up being fitted to TE311 unless required).

Obviously Fluffy will be able to give a more accurate/detailed answer!
