BBMF sold?

Seen on another forum:

“The BBMF aircraft are not owned by the RAF or MOD but leased to them, so the costs there can be if need be passed back to their owners”.

This is news to me. Fluffy or anyone else, just what is the situation?

Doesnt Hurricane PZ865 have a civil reg no G-AMAU? or is that now defunct?

It was listed in an old Ian Allan “Civil Aircraft Markings” as having the dual identity, along with G-AISU in a late 70s/1980 edition I have somewhere, but I suspect they were actually long defunct by then…

No i spent about 2 weeks on that thread arguing about the oldest commisioned warship etc but that is off topic slightly.

Indeed, As Toddington Ted pointed out earlier in this thread, just thought it interesting. There was a good deal of posturing there too.

The great thing is at least we have a better national pride for this sort of thing than any other country seem’s to have.

At least we have 2 historical flights in this country unlike anyone else in the world.

My dad’s sense of heritage is bigger than you dad’s sense of heritage? Good oh.

Try the Greek Navy ship Olympias for a really historical sense of military heritage. 😉

We have two – the RNZAF Historic Flight, and the RNZAF

I assume you are refering to the BBMF and Royal Navy Historic Flight?. Does this on not count? Army Historic Aircraft Flight

It is the same as HMS victory still officially on the Navy roll of battle not that i would like to go to war on her

Probably shows up on radar as a forest…. 😉 & have you seen what passes for the Fleet these days???? 😮

I think this is the only country in the world with a navy with 200 year old ships

Could they be mixing up the BBMF with the FAA Historic Flight?

Re.:G-AMAU

I am searching for years to get the c/n of the airframe but to no avail.

G-INFO gives the RAF serial.

I am confident that one our honorable members have the answer somewhere.

Thks in advance.

Not forgetting AB910….

In 1947 AB910 was purchased by Group Captain Alan Wheeler and was placed on the civil register as G-AISU for air racing. After a heavy landing during the Kings Cup Air Race in 1953, she was returned to Vickers-Armstrong where she was refurbished and subsequently flown regularly by Jeffrey Quill until being donated to the Flight in 1965.

I’m sure that’s the case – though does the RAF own them or the MoD?

All RAF aircraft are MOD 😉

It is funny that the BBMF aircraft appear on the RAF roll of battle and ARE officially listed as active on the same.

It is the same as HMS victory still officially on the Navy roll of battle not that i would like to go to war on her or in a lancaster.

I think this is the only country in the world with a navy with 200 year old ships and 70 year old aircraft still operational.

Not so, the USS Constitution, built in 1797, is still owned and maintained by the US Navy. As a previous serving RN officer and a currently serving RAF officer, I don’t find this situation funny, its part of our military ethos and culture which so many aspire to but cannot emulate (Gawd, I sound like my old Stn Cdr!). I presume you mean “unusual” rather than “humorous” in which case I would agree. To follow up Moggy’s post regarding C17s, its been announced that we are receiving another one (next year!) to make it 5 and yes we are buying them.
