BCWM's Jaguar GR.1 Roll-Out

The Bentwaters Cold War Museum’s Jaguar GR.1 XX741 was rolled-out today after restoration and will be put on display outside the museum by next weekend (the museum is open on the Bank Holiday Sunday & Monday)
It looks immaculate, a credit to the restoration team.

XX741 growls and prowls in 2019. 2020 will hopefully see her fast taxi, not much left to get her capable to do that.

Its only when something like this happens in preservation that all the hard work, blood sweat and tears all seems worth it. Power to your elbows lads keep up the good work looking forward to seeing the a/c move under its own power sometime in the future.

Righty Adour now rigged

And the Rudder structural distortion test switch now also works.

We have also assembled our droppers. Adour transit stands have other uses! Waiting for better weather to prep and paint outside.

Great results, I cannot recall so many ex service jets being restored to run in the UK before the current times , a tribute to all the technicians keeping the knowledge alive.

Got both Adours to dry motor. Yesterday saw us fit all the right engine ancilleries. We are missing a reheat control rod (that we hope Everett Aero will be able to help us with) , have to fit a couple of other rods, rig the rods and the engine controls to the throttles.. And sort out a bit of fuel so we can do the first idle runs.

The small gas turbine is a MicroTurbo “Sahpir” Air Producer unit. Centrifugal compressor /axial turbine unit that over produces compresssed air volume to power air turbine starter units on the Adours via starting valves. Excess air is ejected by a discharge valve that is closed by air pressure when a vent valve is closed and a start valve is opened for either engine. The Sahpir is used in the Jaguar and the Hawk. On the linked page, is the control unit. Various relays in our unit have been found to be outside working limits.

Thanks for that, every day is a school day.

By the looks of it the motor is a small gas turbine, possibly the one shown at the end of the video?

Yes. All a dry motor does is throw oil around the lubrication system. Wet motor will bleed the fuel system. The Dry motor showed good oil pressure.

A dry motor is simply spinning the engine over on its starter without fuel. A wet cycle is when you spin the engine and add fuel but no ignition thus it doesn’t start. I would imagine the guys will do a number of dry and wet cycles before attempting starting the engines so they can check oil and fuel pressures etc.

For the benefit of the unknowing, like me, what was the Dry Motor?
I could guess that it’s a device for spinning up the engine compressor for a start.

I really like the work that you guys are going, just a pity that the BCWM is so far away!

be to difficult to make an airworthy example if ever allowed ?

Please pass on my congratulations to your team and may the New Year bring with the sound of spinning engines…..:applause::cool:
