Beagle Celebration @ Shoreham 11/6/05 (20 pics)

There was a Beagle Celebration held at Shoreham Airport today in recognition of the technical achievements of Beagle Aircraft and its precursors – Auster and Miles.

A large number of aircraft flew in for the event, which was blessed with good weather for a change. There was also a six ship formation flypast of Bulldogs and Pups and a flypast by an ex-RAF Basset.

The first batch of pics are of some of the visitors…

B206X

The 206X is currently in the care of the Shoreham Airport Visitor centre and is being restored to display condition by a group of volunteers. The next time you go to Shoreham call in at the Visitor Centre who have a viewing area where you can see the amount of work that has been done, and the current state of restoration

Here are some pics of the formation, one of the unique Bullfinch prototype YR

Didn’t know the retractable geared Bullfinch is still around – last time I saw G-BDOG was on the SAL stand at the Paris Airshow in 74 or 75, when it was wearing a slightly garish purple and orange colour scheme IIRC… glad to see that it’s (she’s?) still airworthy.

Bulldog XX630. noticed your post ——————————————————————————–Have been trying to upload pics all day, and have received a variety of error messages ranging from “cannot find server” to “faulty messages returned from server”.
So appologies folks but I’ve had enough disapointment and frustration for one day

Did you overcome your difficulties and eventually post your pics? Would love to see them! I was invited to the celebration, but due to exhorbitant air fares (hi-peak) was unable to attend. I worked for Beagle 66-69 in the publications dept. Also, was stationed at Boscombe Down on Handling Squadron while the Bassett was being evaluated. In fact it was the Beagle Rep at BD, that was responsible for my getting the job at Beagle. A wonderful company, and a marvellous assemblage of terrific, clever people ever collected under a hanger or drawing office roof. Not to mention Shoreham Airport, the nicest location one could ever hope to work, which likely contributed to the extremely high morale.

What a good day!

Thanks for the pics YR, a really good day, and a chance to meet some fascinating people.
We also owe a huge vote of thanks to Dave and Al our instructors who made our flypast possible.

I’ve attached some pics of the day, the A2A shots were taken from XX630.

All the best, and Happy Landings!

I was hoping you would respond, Paul. Your Cranwell display scheme is unique. I tried to get Blue Section in a pic in the turns, but these digital viewfinders are not that clear when you’re being bounced about, so all I got was sky!

Yakrider,

When you described that Bulldog colour scheme to me, I could not have visulised just how good it looks! Great pics, and thanks for posting them.

Thanks, guys.

Something I forgot to mention in the original posts was that one of the main reasons for the event was to hold a reunion of former Beagle employees, many now of advanced years, from both the Shoreham and Rearsby factories. There were a great many there with their families, still very passionate about the aircraft they produced.

G-ARRM, the B206X prototype, which is owned by Brooklands Museum and until recently was with the Bristol Aero Collection at Kemble, is now back where she began. The intention is to start restoration in the hangar where she was built, and she is expected to remain on loan at Shoreham for at least five years.

A nice collection of photos there, Yakrider. I’m ‘from’ Shoreham (the houseboats) originally and must have seen the Pups overhead on many occasions as a nipper.

Shoreham’s just the right setting for the event – I particularly liked the air-to-airs with the River Adur (and the old cement works?) in the background.

As Ozplane said, a refreshing and welcome change from the usual heavy metal.

Thanks for posting these Yak Rider. It makes a nice change from the heavyweight stuff which impressive as it is, features more regularly than the lighter end of classic aviation. It’s surprising how many Pups have their original Beagle paint schemes. Either it was very good paint or their owners can’t bear to change when they get a respray.

It was there looking in remarkably restorable condition, there were also several manufacturers’ models in the terminal building, sadly I omitted to photograph them. Mea culpa!

Very nice pictures. Thanks for sharing. I would liked to have gone but couldn’t make it today. Looks like a good turn out and some sunshine as well. I like the air to air shots. Well done

Was the prototype Beagle 206 G-ARRM present from the museum at Kemble. I saw it dismantled at Kemble about two weeks ago ready for departure by road to Shoreham.

Thanks again

Here are some pics of the formation, one of the unique Bullfinch prototype and a Miles Hawk. I also had a very interesting chat with Ken Wallis, a thoroughly amazing gentleman! Not brilliant A2As because I was shooting through the canopy. An excellent day all round.
