Last time I had the misfortune of being stuck in Weston-Super-Mare I found a pub selling a porter delighting in the name of ‘Old Slug’. And very nice it was too…

Quite right Daz. I guess it’s the taste bud equivalent of ‘beer goggles’
All manner of odd stuff on the continent, and of course ‘Snozzle’ in Cornwall
In deepest north Hampshire (lager land ) there is a pub about 8 miles from me that has very well kept “Doombar” from Cornwall….. now that is tasty ;)… as for Guiness, if I ever get to Ireland I may try it as I’m told it is different, but I doubt it will ever get me excited, Caffries was Ok if looked after, but with more and more pubs, the notion of keeping a beer cellar is seemingly becoming a thing of the past.

But they may sell proper beer instead… 😉
By: steve rowell - 18th March 2010 at 09:33
Twaddle.
Try some proper beer, lad.
They may not sell Newkie Broon in his area 😉

I’ve only ever had it (the mix) from cans at home with Tia Maria from one of small bottles you can buy. Though I may have had it once or twice at bar after getting a lady friend to order a single glass of Tia Maria for me.
It’s very true that some locally brewed ales/beers/even lagers are very good indeed, often better than mass produced stuff. There are a few pubs here that do their own brews, often cheaper and better than the rest.
But yeah, St. Patricks. Hope everyone had a good one. My work was noticeably quieter today with people taking the day off…

I am a great believer in sticking to the local brew wherever I go (Within reason. I wouldn’t go so far as to drink Boddingtons just because I was unfortunate enough to find myself drinking in Manchester)
This has meant Coors and Bud in the States and at Mildenhall, Victoria Bitter in Perth WA and Earl Soham – plus some Redback Light, but not at Earl Soham. All manner of odd stuff on the continent, and of course ‘Snozzle’ in Cornwall
I think I’d rather endure the taste of pure Guinness than face the embarrassment of asking a barperson to pour some Tia Maria into it, though I can imagine it would help – be honest, it would be hard for it to make it taste worse. I’d say I would experiment at home, but canned Guinness is even fouler than the draught and I am pretty certain I don’t own a bottle of Tia Maria

There is no better stout or indeed beer than Guinness.
Twaddle.
Guinness is mass-produced in factories these days.
Try some proper beer, lad.
There are some quite splendid ales brewed only a few miles from you – Caledonian 80/- springs to mind.

I can stand it, had a couple of pints last night cause of St. Paddy’s, but moved on to some cheap and strong lager after.
Moggy, if you can get away with it, try it with a shot or so of Tia-Maria in it. It sweetens it up and makes it taste better (to those who don’t like it).
St. Patricks Day – International Drinking Day. All around the world, even for those who haven’t even heard of Ireland, use it as an excuse to go out and get drunk! Not that I ever turn the oppertunity down myself…

There is no better stout or indeed beer than Guinness. It is always my drink of choice St Patrick’s or not, I am just glad of the company in drinking it that only comes one day a year!
By: Blue_2 - 17th March 2010 at 23:08
I nearly weakened and went for the black stuff. But common sense prevailed and black sheep bitter was called for instead! 😉
By: DazDaMan - 17th March 2010 at 23:07
Surely, Mogwart, if you’re drinking 6 pints of the black stuff, there’s a reason for it other than “tastes so foul”??
Or is it just that after two pints all your taste buds have been killed and you can no longer taste it? :diablo: That’s how it was with me and the strawberry lager…!
(Mind you, I agree with you. I don’t think I’ve ever finished a pint of it in my life! :o)
By: Moggy C - 17th March 2010 at 23:00
You are surely mistaken. :dev2:
Nope.
I went out tonight specifically to raise a pint of Guinness to all the friends I had, and some I lost, over in Ireland.
I raised two.
And they were both equally disgusting.
The tipping point is at least six in my estimation.

Do they actually need an excuse round your neck of the woods?
By: steve rowell - 17th March 2010 at 21:31
The plastic paddies are out in force here..it’s laughable..any excuse for a booze up
By: Arabella-Cox - 17th March 2010 at 19:26
It looks so gorgeous and tastes so foul.
Moggy
You are surely mistaken. :dev2:
