Been there, done it!!

Did you wonder if the Service would ever end?

Reminded me of 1952 (?) when we were up on the right of the Altar steps – tap on the shoulder – Flt Sgt Colour bearer stuck in traffic – cold sweat – but fine – until you have to come backwards down those steps!!

DO agree about the wings waggling bit – a human touch for a change.

We were certainly not allowed to be ‘agnostic’ when I was a ‘Brat’ at Halton, being a jock I had to be CSFC (church of scotland and free churches )
Harry Secombe’s brother was the vicar at our passing out service…he was funnier than dear old Harry.
We were in stitches when he called us ‘Spanner Wielders’…we thought he was going to say ‘Spanner W***ers’ (rhymes with Bankers) which was a much used term at that time 😀

edit …he was Fred Secombe
and has written quite a few books !!

We were outside the Abbey to watch the flypast. I’ve seen Spitfires over the capital before, but never with a Hurricane. The second pass with wings waggling was brilliant. Always seems more memorable than seeing it at an airshow, somehow.

Wouldn’t have missed it for the world.

Peter,
I was always told (by an Army colleague) that the Standard Bearer (and escorts) could keep their hats on in church. Went back, apparently, to the days of good old Queen Henry IX and the battle of Little Bogley-on-the-Moor in AD Canteen (or wherever/whenever).

MancFrank,
The trick was to have your religion on your bed-card as “Agnostic”. They were allowed (or the Sgt Admin was unsure!) whereas Atheists were not allowed – you had to have A Religion. Then, on a CofE Station Parade, when the command “RCs, Jews, and ODs, Fall Out!” was given you (as an “OD”) could nip behind the hangar for a fag!! Didn’t matter how long the Padre droned on for!!!!

Are you quite sure you are allowed to keep your hats on in the house of Gawd

As an avowed atheist, services ALWAYS take too long!!:) But today isn’t about that….

Watching out for the usual inane presenter questions / statements now whilst awaiting the BBMF & Tonka flypast.

Regards,
Frank

PS: You not fancy it this year Tim?
