[updated:LAST EDITED ON 24-04-02 AT 05:21 PM (GMT)]Today, an ABL F-16BM has crashed near Sellingen, Holland. It flew against an ULM, killing both the pilot of the ULM and the pilot of the F-16 in the front seat. The pilot in the backseat could eject safely, but has some serious injuries. At this moment, both Dutch and Belgian teams of the air force are investigating what was the cause of this accident and how it was possible that the operators of the control towers didn’t noticed the ULM.
This is already the 32th crash of an ABL F-16, and the 13th deadly accident. The public opinion will ask again how this is possible …

GRONINGEN – Een Belgisch F-16-gevechtsvliegtuig is vanmiddag iets voor 13 uur neergestort in Sellingen (gemeente Vlagtwedde) in de provincie Groningen. De F-16 kwam volgens de Nederlandse Luchtmacht in botsing met een sportvliegtuigje. De piloot van de F-16 en één inzittende van het kleine vliegtuigje kwamen om het leven.
Een bemanningslid van het gevechtsvliegtuig is met een traumahelikopter afgevoerd.
De straaljager stortte neer in de buurt van een camping. Ooggetuigen meldden op Radio Noord vanaf een nabijgelegen camping dat er twee straaljagers in de lucht waren. Zij zagen twee toestellen vliegen, de tweede bleef na het neerstorten van de eerste boven het gebied cirkelen. Een andere ooggetuige meldde dat het neergestorte toestel al in de lucht in brand stond. De F-16 stortte brandend neer.
De Nederlandse Raad voor de Transportveiligheid heeft inmiddels aangekondigd een onderzoek naar het ongeval in te stellen.
