Belgian museum (Brussels?) Spitfire – hanging from the ceiling

If anyone know which one I’m talking about, what would be the correct serial?

Mk IX I believe?

If the one hanging is a replica, do they have other IX’s of the real deal?

A Norwegian pilot is adamnt that the Spitfire he crashlanded some time after D-Day still exists in Belgium. However, I can’t connect the dots. It looks like he was sadly in the wrong about it.

RM873 <– actually RM747, not 873

I knew it was one or t’other – Spitfire Survivors gives both, but I just picked one of the serials!

RM927
RN201
SM832

The Mk.IX is a replica and hangs from the roof in one of the other halls within the Army Museum in Brussels. It is not in the same central hall as the two aforementioned machines (Mk.IX MJ783, and Mk.XIV MV246), it flies above the 1919-1944 Hall (Item 5 shown on the museum layout here –> http://www.klm-mra.be/klm-new/plan-map/map%20of%20the%20royal%20army%20museum.pdf)

The following link is a good place to start for surviving Spitfire information

RN201
SM832

(I missed one when I counted originally!)

I’ve not included Mk.XIV RN203, simply because it’s not a complete airframe. Presumably, though, it was also built as a high-back, so that would make it 8 airframes surviving.

Six, by my reckoning, of which two currently fly.

Do you have the serial no’s? 🙂 Thanks

Great to see a XIV on display, even if it is really a XVIII. There seems to be very few high back XIV survivors around. 🙁

Thanks for the update on the present Overloon a/c.
I would think that the Spitfires now in Museums and presently flying have a history that one can check.
Perhaps the Norwegian pilots example survived for a while after the war but was scrapped many years ago, along with many other a/c.

The Spitfire at Overloon is a Mk XVIII represented as a Mk XIV. Can’t be the one DCK is looking for.

Am I correct in saying that….
When on outside display (also a Harvard and B-25D FR193) they had Spitfire PR XI PL965.
This was traded and now this a/c has returned to flying condition?
Now on indoor display is Spitfire XIV NH649. My photo dated Sept 2010

Also in Belgium at the Belgium AF Technical School at Saffraanberg was Spitfire LFIXe SM-29, exMK912. Replaced with an F104. My photo dated Aug 1970. A/C now in the UK?

Easiest way to check is if he can give you the serial.

Thanks for the replies. It doesn’t look like the Norwegian pilot was right concerning this museum. Perhaps he means another museum in the Be-Ne-Lux area.

The ones in the air section are real. The other one is a replica AFAIK.

According to their website they have a replica MkIX marked BS435.
The displayed MkIXc is marked GE+B MJ360 but is actually MJ783.
