Belgian paracommando's

Hi everybody,

Are paratroopers actually still important in a modern army? Since WWII, helicopters could do the job. But still, there are some advantages for paratroopers (except the landing which is very dangerous). In belgium, we still have a large force of paracommando’s (paratroopers and commando’s formed together the paracommando’s or para’s as we call them). They have a high qualified training and are prepared for a war at any moment. A couple of years ago we had problems because a couple of them were threating local inhabitants (in rwanda) in a inhuman way! Frying a 10-year old kid on the BARBQ and “urinating” on them are just examples, but shows how hard these men are! You can’t ofcourse be proud of this! But i read an article in “Bonanza” in which an officer agreed that these men were not suited for UN-peacekeeping missions (or as we call it blue helmets)! They actually burnt their blue barrets and putted on again their red ones for which they had to suffer so long! I understand belgian gov. needs troops out there, but these men are not trained as policemen, they are not neutral! Send regular troops out there, but they were frustrated because they had to act like shrinks and peacekeepers instead of fighting without thinking!

Anyway has comments on this? Should we stop deploying para’s as peacekeepers?

Greetings
