Belgrade Airport Modernization & Expansion begins…

First stage of Gate of Serbia project underway

BELGRADE, September 16, 2003 – Serbian Minister of Transport and Telecommunications Marija Raseta-Vukosavljevic said that the first stage of the Gate of Serbia project, valued at between ˆ500 million and 600 million, started on Tuesday.

The seven stage project includes the reconstruction of the Belgrade Airport landing facility and the construction of a regional cargo warehouse, business premises, a duty-free zone, a luxurious hotel, as well as railway access lines, Raseta-Vukosavljevic told the press, adding that the first two stages will be completed by May 2004.

According to the minister, the project aims to make use of Belgrade’s strategic position and transport corridors to make the capital the regional air transport centre.

The reconstruction of the airport landing facility calls for some ˆ27 million, said Belgrade Airport General Manager Branislav Vitasovic, noting that the airport has secured half of the required funding.

A feasibility study is due to be completed in ten days, said Serbian Construction Land Directorate head Zoran Popovic, adding that the project will be financed from funds secured by the airport and the government, as well as from international loans and foreign investment.

I went on a orginazed tour of Belgrade in 1989. Superb museum if in a bit of a strange building. Lots off WW2 stuff(Spit,Hurricane,Me109 etc), some nice commercial stuff outside. JU52,Li2,DC3,Caravelle,Dove,Convair,IL14 and a Short Sealand.
We had a tour of JAT maintiance and the light aircraft. There were a couple of airforce YAK 40’s, most of the JAT fleet including ATR’s, all the DC10’s and the light stuf, Cessna 402’s,Agcats and AN2’s!
We didn’t see too much foreign visitors but did manage one of my only 2 Interflug 134’s( I saw them all after the fall of the wall at SCO).
We also did Zagreb managing to get detained by the authorities( a whole coatch of us!) for a hour. Somehow we kept braking down on the motorway opposite the Yougoslav AF AN26 ramp.

I transited through BEG en route LHR-TIA in 87. Would I be correct in the fact that I saw a JAT Caravelle and Convair 440 on the opposite side of the runway from the terminal..is there a museum at BEG?
