Bell P-63 Kingcobra Project

Welcome!

Following a few requests from the “Cockpitfest” thread, I am creating this new thread about our P-63 Kingcobra project. Please feel free to contribute and if anyone has any P-39/P-63 parts then we would love to hear from you.

Attached are a few photos, the first photo is of one of 6 P-63’s C models that were recovered from Eastern Russia, the one pictured has been set up in a “diarama” to represent the airfield that it was recovered from. This forms part of the “Ghosts of Tundra” display at the Wings Museum near Balcombe in Sussex, our B5N2 Kate is displayed opposite representing “friend & foe”.

We also have 4 x sets of wings (one can be seen in the photo below) as you can see they are quite amazing with original Red Stars, we hope to be able to trade the spare wings and maybe a fuselage etc to help us move forward with our own project.

The last photo was taken at Cockpitfest 2011, work commenced on the cockpit of 43-11137 during late July 2010. If anyone knows of any cabin doors then we would like to hear from you!

Thanks for reading.

Does anyone out there have a landing gear warning horn as fitted to most US warbirds? I have the empty bracket but alas a vacant horn! would be nice to fill another gap.

Thanks

Great thread, best of luck, one point though is once its flying, remember it’s quite a heavy bird and won’t be able to be thrown about like a stunt plane.

Hey, just noticed the air intake is damaged on Walts and not on the other, so not the same fuselage section.

Wonder where both are now?

Hi Steve,

Might well be this one, which sold in the states a few years back, the front damage looks very much like the one in your photo.

Love his “shed” in the form of the B-36!

Will post some pics of the B5N2 Kate for your interest on another thread.

Didn’t realize AAviaM was seeking a Cobra…an idea…might be worth checking the status of the P-63A hulk Walt Soplata had in Ohio. It really does look like a freshly-recovered airframe, and wears standard OD/grey paintwork; all you’d need would be to add Soviet stars and put it on “diorama” display!

Here’s the only pic I have showing that Kingcobra; it was taken in summer 1982, at which time the 63 was tucked inside the centre fuselage of a B-36, along with the remains of a P-82 Twin Mustang. What a place…

Redhill, got any pix of the B5N to post? I had no clue there was anything like that in the UK!

Can you give me your e-mail address please, can’t seem to find one under your members details. Or you can PM me if its easier.

Thanks

Good day,

Can help for the gunsight as i’ve got 2 spare N-9 : one in good “relic” condition and a “nice” one. Both without sighting head as the P-63 was not fitted with either the B1 or B2 sigthing head. Just PM me if you’re interested.

But are you sure you actually need an N-9? As you know, P-63 up to A-9 version were fitted with N-3C gunsights.

Laurent

PM on its way to you now.

Get away from our Canadian wrecks (LOL)

Our museum (the Alberta Aviation Museum) is in Edmonton Alberta, start of the North West Staging Route to Alaska and then the Soviet Union.

We have been following up rumours and crash site information for years as the P-39 or P-63 (or both) are on our acquisition list and sorely missing.

Back in the 70s early 80s it appears the few that had any potential of being salvaged were scooped up and went to the USA.

Now all that we have been able to track are “Hard impact” crash sites where the big parts left are pretty little.

Nope not read the book, I will put it on my Christmas list! on the subject of gunsites I thought they could have been a bit more generious with the padding!

If anyone has an N9 gunsight, then the project could do with one (quite soon).

Thanks

Dan

No she looks in lovely condition,I was laughing because I saw an almost identical chip on the Hud of a brand new Hawk T2 🙂

Have you read ‘Nanette’ by Edwards Parks BTW ?…he was operational on P39 + P400 during WW2

Hi,

Thanks for the idea, have been down that route already although only with one contact, pretty fruitless but did get a bunch of cockpit parts from a P-39, evidently would have been part of the RAF delivery due to various “Air Ministry” Radio Kit being fitted. The only part which could be used again was the rear view mirror.

Good day,

For parts for your project, did you think about Canadian wrecks?

P-63 probably took the same ferry routes to Russia as P-39 did.

There is a guy called blue-yonder on Flikr that posted many photos of P-39 crash wrecks he visited in the past. What is still there is incredible and an absolute treasure trove of parts for any restoration. So, if it’s the case for P-39, it’s also probably the case for P-63. Might be worth contacting him.

Was impressed at lack of modern avionics and sat nav, think we can forgive chip in the gunsight glass! Totally stock condition, no doubt I will be pausing the clip for reference. :p

Great Youtube “from the cockpit”

This is well worth a look, wack the volume up on your PC and enjoy, interesting noise from that prop shaft! Update on the P-63 project to follow in the next few weeks.
