Benes Mraz

Shot this one in Germany last month. Said to be a Benes Mraz , a type I had never heard of before. I’ll guess it is from the Eastern Block. Any one with more info on this one? BW Roger

Nice to know she’s in good hands.

Photo taken at Old Warden, 29 Sept 1974, I commented on the back of the print that it was only the second time I’d seen it in 11 years!

Currently up for sale. Has a valid Permit until next March, asking price £31k o.n.o

OK thanks, I’m not totally crazy – it’s the Sokol development the LET MetaSokol that has reverse-tricycle u/c. The text describes this landing gear as “unique” I wonder if there are any other types with similar undercarraige?

Roger Smith.

One of the Aeronca machines had the same type of undercarriage. I’m not sure but I think it was the original incarnation of the Citabria.

Anyone know its current circumstances?

Still based at Breighton last time I looked.

Jochen will be interested to learn that a red doped was resident at Brussels airport in the 50’s.

When I dig out the photograph, I will put it on the net

Family resemblance…

It bears a distinct resemblance to the ‘Sokol hanging in the Prague Museum, as posted on my thread of last month.

I thought that the Sokol was the one with the “tail” wheel midway along the fuselage ie a reverse-tricycle undercarraige.
It’s my age, someone help me!

It’s a Benes-Mraz M.1D Sokol. The type was produced post-war in Czechoslovakia, and some found their way abroad, both for civilian and military operators. Judging by its appearance, the design was possibly influenced by the Arado Ar 79.

The Sokol you saw and photographed is possibly D-EFTB, c/n 304. At least one more is currently airworthy, SE-XGD, c/n 339.

Regards,

Jan
