This Sunday the Bentwaters Cold War Museum are having their main Open Day which should include a fly-by from an RAF Sea KIng and a U.S Army marked Ryan Navion on static (if its home airfield is still not waterlogged !!)
Also on offer are guided coach tours around the former Cold War airfield which is usually out of bounds to the public to see the bomb dump area, hardened aircraft shelters, hush house,’star wars’ building etc
Personnel from the 67th Special Operations Squadron ‘Night Owls’ will also be there as the museum is celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Squadron which spent 22 years at nearby RAF Woodbridge (1970-1992),other things on show are ex-military vehicles,Land Rover club, owls and other creatures !! ,archery from the Framlingham bowman, fire engines, other stalls and not to be overlooked the Woodbridge ATC and their bbq 🙂
Looking forward to it

I was also there when they recovered the crew of a damaged freighter between Ireland and Iceland. They refuelled from a HC-130 to get the range. I don’t think any other SAR organization could have saved them that far out to sea.
I remember that happening

No, that was Graham Haynes the museums chairman. There are three Grahams at the museum and it gets very confusing sometimes !!
Thanks 😉

Good to see the ARRS/SOW unit being remembered.
During my time at Bentwaters/Woodbridge I had the honor of flying with them a couple of times. A great deal of fun doing practice recoverys over the North Sea and a rather spirited pass at the Ipswich Airport (RIP).

I have one of their patches next to my HH-53 desk model.

Yes it is a shame the airfield owners did not follow on with another airshow but the museum will always do its best to put on a good event.
We had a few things planned for this year flying wise but as nearly always for different reasons they did’nt happen,we have now heard that the Navion is unable to attend due to the soggy ground at its home base.
But we have got the Museums own Jaguar GR.1 which has been towed out of the restoration hanger for the day to be on static display.

I went on the coach tour a couple of years ago ,and i must say it was very good ,its a shame that the they wont be having an Air show there , I thought it was a very popular event and yet it was a one off you could say , i wonder why ,i guess the locals didn,t like all the traffic and people in the Area ? Perhaps the owners should think about putting on Another Airshow ,we were told it was going to be every two years ?
Cheers Terry
