Berck-sur-Mer airfield

I have acquired a photo of an Armstrong Whitworth FK8, s/n E8834, taking off from Berck, probably between 28 Jan and 4th Feb 1919. There are a number of visual clues that should help identify the direction in which it is flying, and would appreciate some help. The photo shows the aircraft over a long, straight road, with a small hill in the distance to the left of the road. I suspect the hill might be (or in) Parc de Bagatelle, but I would appreciate advice if there are any other small hills in the locality of Berck. What poor maps I’ve found suggest the whole area is pretty flat.

TIA
Brian

I should have picked up the shadow Moggy – I didn’t, so thanks for drawing it to my attention. Being a metman I can use that clue, plus the snow, to tie down the date – it just means searching the met archives. I’m now concentrating on the 8th to 13th Feb. I know where the aircraft logs are in the NA, so I can find out which dates E8834 was flying.

If you are a UK flyer your first overseas flight is almost certain to be to Le Touquet.

Channel crossing by the shortest route Dover > Cap Gris Nez you pass Berck as you route down the coast.

From the shadow on the picture, if the aircraft is heading east then the shot was taken in the early morning. The length of the cyclists shadow seems to support this.

Bet it was chilly in that cockpit. 😮

That was my feeling as well, but this is not my normal territory. Many thanks.

from that pic, it looks like the road on the eastern boundary looking north, so the approximate direction of flight would be to the east. Feel free to correct me, since I am only going by modern maps.

small hills to the south west, and one to the immediate north of the airfield. No more than higher ground really… can you post the pic? The whole area is vertually flat
