Hi people
How many of you remember this series.
Well do any of you remember the episode where:-
At the start of the program they have a shot of a glass bottomed pleasure cruiser and a lot of people in the boat looking through the glass when they are sailing along looking at all the pretty fishes suddenly an aircraft with a skull (complete with flying goggles and helmet) comes into view. The skull was centered on as the main focus. And everyone screams.
Now if I remember this aircraft was depicted as German but I could be wrong and I was only young at the time and not really that interested in Bergerac just watching it instead of getting sent to bed.
My questions are:-
1: does anyone remember this episode?
2: What aircraft exist under water at Jersey?
3: Was this a real aircraft or just a mock up film prop?
4: In either case of the above question. What was the aircraft?
Hopefully somebody knows the answer to the questions.
Regards Scott

RE: Bergerac and the planes within.
To date I have identified 44 Allied Aircraft lost in the general area of the Channel Islands. On top of this there is an equal if not greater number of Luftwaffe aircraft lost as well.
The vast majority were lost around Guernsey, due in main to it’s closer proximity to the UK and slightly more distance from the coast of France.
In 1999 a memorial was unveiled to a Free French Pilot who came down in Jersey in November 1942, he was one of the 50 shot after the great escape. This year we unveiled a plaque to two Whirlwind Pilots lost to the south of Jersey in December 1942.
In 2004 I intend to do a third plaque to a Belgian Sqn Ldr killed in July 44 in the north west of the island.
If you would like to contact me off board I will be more than happy to tell you more about the aircraft and pilots lost in or around the Channel Islands.

RE: Bergerac and the planes within.
Thanks guys that info was just what I was looking for.
As I said I was only a kid but recently I remembered what show it was on and so I thought I would ask the question.
Just out of interest does anyone else know of any other aircraft off the coast of Jersey.
I am not asking you to give away locations etc just a brief I know there is a ?????? kind of answer I know a lot of people like to keep these things to their selves and quite rightly so if thats what they wish.

If anyone is interested in wrecks in the sea in general. There is a book that gives a comprehensive list of aircraft lost off Scotland as well as boat and ship wrecks. It is indeed called Off Scotland and is by Ian Whittaker. I can vouch for this book as I have read it. It is a really good data book indeed one of the finest. Get it out the library before going to buy it as it comes in at £40 and would be a pity if it were not what you were looking for.
Also you can view amendments and updates to the book on the Off Scotland web site just search the web with the title and you will find it.

RE: Bergerac and the planes within.
It was a Me110 mock-up with supposedly a cargo of loot . I seem to remember a chalis from a church was one of the items recovered by
Charlie Hungerford if my memory serves me right!

RE: Bergerac and the planes within.
I believe 2 Whirlwinds ended up in the sea off the Channel Islands after a small fracas with the Hun.
These were off course the proper ones, not the eggbeater variety.
