Hello folks.

Thanks for all the assistance, Martin especially, that Kaufbeuren link will help me no end, cheers 🙂

Pat’s 6thjuin site was where this research stemmed from, I happened to notice ‘211’ on the ‘Albany’ formation page so without that I wouldn’t have been able to get in contact with her pilot Cecil Petty who was overjoyed to hear that his old ship was still active. Unfortunately Cecil passed away early last month but at least he got to hear that his aircraft was still going.

The Avro York and the Sunderland were used during the airlift but as they are not American I suppose their usage can be discounted.

What was the point of that stupid statement?

I asked about C-47’s in the airlift….admittedly I didn’t know other nationalities took part although when you think about it, it makes perfect sense….

Either way I asked about C-47’s so assuming I don’t care about British C-47’s taking part is a bad move on your part kev.

Shame on you….

‘The aircraft of the 61st TCG participated using C-54 Skymasters to ferry coal, flour, and other cargo into West Berlin.’
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhein-Main_Air_Base

‘Further afield at Kaufbeuren Air Base in Bavaria, was
the 60st Troop Carrier Group consisting of the 10th, 11th, and 12th Troop
Carrier Squadrons. Nominally, these units totaled ninety-six C-47s.’

Maybe this is of any help to your investigations.

Now, don’t be B*tchy…:D
The question was about Dakotas (the most numerous type used)…no nationalities were mentioned.

What’s next “Name your favorite actors from Gunfight at the OK Corral”.
Reply: “Peter Sellers visited Arizona once, but I suppose that doesn’t count because he’s English…”:D

I’m researching our C-47 43-15211 at the moment and from various sources I’ve worked out that she was in Germany, around the Frankfurt area, around the time that the airlift started so I’m wondering whether she ever flew supplies in or was just supporting ‘The Lift’ out of the firing line so to speak. She was assigned to the USAF until June 1950 when supplied to Norway. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated 🙂

Cheers

Do you want info only on US operated C-47, or all Dak family types used by other services, such as the RAF? I discovered the other day that the RAAF were there (in small numbers) flying Daks.

There’s a few surviving Daks that have recorded Berlin Airlift service; is that info useful?

Edited to add: Hastings were used as well from late 1948 and in 1949 civilian aircraft were involved as well.

It seems like the C-54 is the airplane you hear most about when it comes to the Airlift, but I’ve always wondered just how many C-47’s were used, and it seems a fair amount of them were involved as well.

Interesting.

Edit. ‘The Berlin Airlift required 308 aircraft of the C-47 vintage, the military equivalent of the DC-3. Seventeen C-5s could have completed the same operation, according to a fact sheet on Dover AFB’s Web site.’
