Berlin Wreck – what is it?

Curious to a very battered airframe at the back of the Technik museum, Berlin, consisting of:

1 complete wing with Wellington type undercarriage.
Colour green uppers, black undersides.

Undersides very barnacled, suggesting immersion in shallow water.

Pale brown/yellow interior

Round windows, about saucer size.

1 very battered wing.

Any ideas?

RE: Berlin Wreck – what is it?

Hearing of the Beaufighter-like landing gear and the rounded windows, could it be a Beaufort??

RE: Berlin Wreck – what is it?

Right A description

The whole thing appears to look like a Dak, but about half the size. it has radial engines, and its retracted undercarriage looks like a Beaufighter. it has small round windows. Quite big wheels about the size of a lanc. Green uppers. Black undersurface. Either square wing tips or sawn off. Sick brown interior.

It doesnt help I had to clamber over the makeshift barrriers to get a look at a heap of wreckage half wrapped up polythene!

RE: Berlin Wreck – what is it?

Sadsack,

Can you give a greater description of what you saw? It still sounds like parts of the Condor, which were sitting outside, except the Condors undercarriage is an unmistakeable arrangement.

You can find some pictures, at http://www.airrace.de

As regards the Lancaster, they are having problems identifying the aircraft too! I’ve sent a list of Lancasters lost in the area, during the time in question, which they are working against. I will try and raise some piccies during the week, and post them here.

Regards

Tony

RE: Berlin Wreck – what is it?

Looking at the picture of the Beaufighter, the undercarriage is identical, however theres no ways the airframe is a Beaufighter.

RE: Berlin Wreck – what is it?

Some answers I hope…..

“Wouldn’t be a Wellington because the canvas would have rotted away leaving no skin at all.As for the idea of a Condor,I thought that the one recovered recently was for a Norweigen museum,so perhaps it isn’t a Condor either.
On a slightly diffferent note, what happened to the substantial remains of a Ju88 that were dragged up from a lake in eastern europe (I think Hungary)a year or two ago?(NOT the one dragged out of a Norwiegen fjord)”

The Condor, is indeed at the Berlin Tech Museum, it was raised, and donated by the Norwegian Air Force Museum, to Berlin (I believe)

There is a very active restoration programme scheduled for this aircraft, and I think it fair to say, it is the biggest complete aircraft restoration ever undertaken by a museum anywhere

Without saying too much, it would be worth a trip to any airshows in the Berlin area next year, just to see how it is coming along.

The JU88 was recovered from Lake Balaton in Hungary, and is also in Berlin, the subject of a stunning restoration, with once again, bits coming from Bodo, from their Staffel of 88’s.

There are several aircraft planned for the new exhibition hall, which I believe was dedicated 2 weeks ago. Do you know that Berlin have substantial Lancaster Parts as well?

Hope this helps….

Tony 🙂

RE: Berlin Wreck – what is it?

its far too small to be a Condor, and it seems to be too small to be Dak, allthough only the undercarriage would suggest it was. It seems to be all metal so thats the Wellington out. The centre sections pretty complete. The weather was foul and even if I had a camera it wouldnt have shown much. It would appear the aircraft landed on one side as one wings fine the other shredded.

The problem is, I think its part of an experiment at the museum. They have lots of old railway engines and machinery left “for nature to take its course”, the idea being however powerful machines can be nothing is as powerful as nature. lets hope it isnt part of that display!

Any idea what aircraft will be in the museums new wing next year?

RE: Berlin Wreck – what is it?

Shame there’s no photo to look at, but by your description I think it could possibly be the remains of that FW200 Condor they attempted to lift last year. Green upper surfaces, small round windows, consists mainly of just the wings, looked like it had been immersed for some time. Sounds Condor-ish to me. Certainly not Wellington, with small round windows. Any other offers anyone?
