Bernard Matthews

I’ve only just seen that Bernard Matthews, famous turkey farmer, died on November 25th. Ironically this date is US’s Thanksgiving Day – sometimes called Turkey Day.

The obituary I first saw said “he served with the RAF’s 617 Sqdn” – what?

Dug a little deeper and he apparently did his national service in the RAF – presumably post-war as he was born in 1930 – as a clerk.

Roger Smith.

Yes … RIP Bernard Matthews ….. He brought affordable poultry meat to the table at a time when it was needed ! Still is one of the largest employers in the locality …. I had the pleasure of working for him during the rapid expansion period during the 70’s and the honour of spending some time working one to one with him on his beloved yacht ….. he was very funny … very serious ….. knew what he wanted … and went out to get it !! He told me he got where he is by having the right people doing the right job at the right time ??

Oh and he owns more runways than BAA …..

Keith.

And the reason old airfields were used is that the turkey sheds could be dotted around each airfield using the runways as foundations and link roads, while at the same time spacing the sheds sufficiently far apart to prevent disease cross infection.

Actually, he’s done a sterling job in preserving some of our airfield heritage.

A lot of his Turkey sheds are built on runways of WW2 airfields. The runways and a fair bit of infrastructure are quite intact.

None of which you can get anywhere near owing to the stench….

That’s true. He bought three ex-RAF airfields didn’t he? Were any other buildings on any of them preserved?
