I looking to buy a second hand mid sized family car, it must be a diesel and priced around £3-4000. What reliable cars with good fuel economy should I be looking out for?

But are your cars a big as an S-Class?
For a large luxury saloon, 33+ mpg is great.
If you’re comapring it with an econobox…it’s not so good.
Of course not john :D:D:D
1x Volvo 440
1x Vauxhall Vectra
total value about £1400 😀

33 mpg !!!! maybe one of the best built diesels John but that fuel consumption figure is terrible…either of my 2 old girls easily do 50mpg and most modern diesels give 55-65 mpg 😀
cheers baz

I could
350 bhp diesel beats 220 petrol any day 🙂
And yes, I know the picture is a petrol version. We have to wait a little for the oil burner

Very nice but I would not like the servicing bill on that model. 🙂

I could never have another diesel awful. I will stick to paying a bit more.:) and having more power 220 bhp 😀

My eventual choice was an 04 plate Skoda Fabia 1.9TDi, in 10 days I’ve done several hundred miles with absolutely no problems at all, and I’ve been averaging about 55mpg.
Hi there…
If you need any advice regarding VAG cars… ie.. The Volkswagan Audi Group, which includes Seat, Skoda etc… see the link in my auto sig..
Im a moderator on there and know my fair share..
In regards to the car you purchased, the PD 1.9tdi unit is a good solid engine, ensure the cam belt and water pump is replaced @ around 60k miles or 4/5 years and keep your eye on the EGR valve for any leaks.

I’m sorry that in my earlier post I forgot to point out that the figures for the cat were actually for a petrol engine, I would imagine the results for a diesel would not be much different. I have to admit that I haven’t had a diesel car since my Sierra 2.3. I still cannot believe the fuel consumption that thing turned in-anything between 55 and 60 mpg on a motorway run,50-55 mixed motoring and about 45-48 around town. I think I really should look at getting a diesel again.

Had diesels now for around 10 years, would never go back to petrol. Had an Mk4 Golf gt tdi 150 was pants, always in the garage with a list of faults as long as your arm, build quality was poor. Completely over priced for what it was.
Now have a Focus MK 2 Zetec 2.0 TDCI 80,000 in 2.5 years not a thing gone wrong with it, no rattles or broken trim. In fact it’s just as good now as when I took delivery. Build quality fantastic, so far to say the best car I have ever owned.

Best diesel?
Easy….the S Class Mercedes (if you can affort it).
A friend in the UK owns one and frequently reports 33+ mpg between London and the hinterlands. Great build quality, comfort and safety.
What’s there not to like?

I have heard that the higher mileage Focus’ can suffer from suspension problems.
I once owned the original S-reg 1997/8 model focus 1.6…never had a problem with it suspension wise and now has well over 100,000miles on it…parents now own it never had a problem.
I now own a 2.0Tdci 54 plate Ford Mondeo Zetec…on a trip to manchester i can get there and back on just under 3/4 of a tank of fuel…and can easily get 66.5mpg out of it at 75mph…
only problem with this one i have is the alternator drive belt, tensioner and pulley needs replacing and they are Ford only parts 😡

I ripped mine off, along with the muffler, straight pipe right off of the turbo…..Then again they arent emissions testing my truck yet over here in the states, but just in case I kept the cat, I can always do a quick reweld.
How about the new Diesel Particulate Filters? They are a serious PITA and really make the trucks over here gas hogs, its freakin ridiculous. As a matter of fact, I’ve heard and read stories of a truck getting 10-11 mpg with all the emissions stuff hung off it, when ripped off and with some software programming that actually gives the engine more power, numbers increasing anywhere from 18-20mpg, and this is for a 8000 plus pound truck.
I know technology has advanced since then but not enough to significantly change these figures for the benefits? of a cat. Fuel consumption up by 10-15%, performance down by anything up to 20%, decrease in harmful emissions -<0.1%. Just goes to show how we’ve been led up the garden path I think.

Chuck – agreed… I still could get my car without particle filter… needless to say I didn’t hesitate one second.
Regarding the Focus, I owned a ’02, 1.8 TDCi 115HP model, and I don’t have many complaints. Suspension was never an issue, but I had the engine hwlongat times, apparently some air intake not closing properly. Annoyed the hell out of me, I at a time thought it was the turbo giving up, but apparently it was fine. The dealership never found out the problem, though.
While I didn’t have the problem, the previous versions wer known to have rust issues at the doors. Check for it. Also, regarding rust, if you have a chroe line on the trunk, and it wasn’t modified, you might have rust there: it scraped the paint, and needed touch up + adding an insulation.
Otherwise, as said, thet car was great. I sold it after +/- 150000 km, and bought the new Focus, this time with a 2L, 136HP, and automatic gearbox. And I don’t regret it either. Even if I didn’t improve the mileage much compared to the previous one: I’m still at around 7,3 or 7,4 L/100km

I only have one thing to say. Why on earth do they now insist on fitting catalytic converters to diesel engines when diesels don’t run hot enough for the cat to actually work?

Indeed well that’s the bonus with mine running into a low tax band costing me £145 a year and that won’t change with the tax band alterations :).
My road tax is amazingly low, something like £30 per annum because of the Hdi engine in my 2007 Peugeot 207 diesel.

My ‘new’ diesel is a 97 Vectra 2.0 Di with FSH,I just fully serviced it inc new discs/pads,got it through its mot etc – total cost £900 and looking like approx 50mpg although I have not done enough miles yet to have an exact figure.
cheers baz

Peugeots are clutch and fly-wheel eaters. and they aint cheap to replace.
Depends how they are driven surely, My 306 Diesel is fourteen years old with the original clutch still in use. come to think of it, it still has the original rear brakes and drums..in fact at 110,000 miles apart from front discs and pads the whole thing is original. Passed its MOT last week too with nothing to spend on it again. Lovely old bus!
Pity my Land Rover Discovery wasnt as easy to maintain.

Ford Focus maybe?
A very large amount on the second hand market and a proven decent runabout, know a few happy owners of them.
I have heard that the higher mileage Focus’ can suffer from suspension problems.
