My Grandson came round on Saturday, His Teacher has asked his class what they thought was the best Invention of the last 100 yrs. He was with me for about a couple of hrs, and we discussed many things, but came to no firm conclusion as to what mankind in general would have thought was the best.
So, I thought I would throw it into the forum to see what fellow members thought.
Mechanical?, Medicine?, advances in Science etc.
What is your opinion?.

TRANSISTOR,responsible for the function of every single modern electronic device you own.Probably saved more lives than any known medicine, and taken a few too.

Simple . . . . the antibiotic.:)
How many lives has that saved?

I’m surprised no-one’s said it yet, but, aircraft!
It’s incredible to think you can fly in a 575 tonne aircraft at Mach .9 at 40,000 feet.
If you took a man from just over a hundred years ago, and told them about the A380 – they might well have called you crazy. I can only really think of that, the internet and the Apollo missions that would provoke the same response 🙂

Renault’s Clio and 1.5 dCi engine.
Even with today’s astronomical fuel prices, mine gets me to work and back every day without fail, in comfort and for reasonable cost.:)

The contraceptive pill 😀
Moggy
You beat me to it.
Pity more people don’t use it.
Reading about celebrities (and others) it’s amazing how often they expect us to believe it “fails”…when it’s usually some girl’s idea of a income producer.
Overall, I gree with Kev..medicine today is wonderfull.
I’m too young to recall the polio outbreaks, it’s pretty sobering reading about the precautions taken.

Quite a few that are all relied on now, the PCB, fibre optic cable, the internet.
I would possibly go with the internet as it really has revolutionised communication and the way we interact with the world but is still very much in the infancy so the full impact will not be understood or appreciated for a long time.

The contraceptive pill 😀
It’s a pity that AIDS came along and necessitated a return to barrier methods. 🙁

Kev. Not often we agree, however, thats what the forum is all about.discussion.
I have had my fair share of Ops etc, and for once I fully agree with you.
I have spent most of my waking hours since Saturday, trying to think, and I have to agree with you.
Medical science, seems to advance the quickest of any other thing I can think of.
Even yesterday, I was watching a delicate Operation, by a Robotic arm, linked to a Computor, with the Surgeon outside the Theater. It went without a hitch. Only a small Op, but nevertheless a great advance. And hopefully, it will progress even further.
Drugs that have been developed by our scientists have been discovered to treat many illnesses, but N.I.C.E. then tell us they are too expensive to obtain via the N.H.S. Sad, but true.

Medicine. The eradication of most childhood life threatening illnesses, the list is long and impressive. The widespread use of both wide spectrum and targeted antibiotics. Technological advances which have brought critical and trauma care to the point they are at today, the introduction of inhalers and nebulisers which make asthma manageable. The list is almost endless.
However, advances in medicine can be, and are, occasionally a double edged sword.

Injection Moulding.
Used to build everything from PC’s to Refrigerators.
Try and find something in your house that does not incorporate some form of injection plastic.
