Best male comedian ever

There is a posting on the forum Ricky who???
It seems we can go one better if we can state which male comedian we think is, or was the best ever, not for crudity but for good old fashioned humour.
Personally I liked Les Dawson, what about you?.

No, the best comedian, is the boss of M.B.N.A. who has sent letters out to all it’s Card holders telling them they will have to pay an extra 25% nearly, every month from April.
Typical Yanks, sub prime lending etc, banks giving large bonuses etc.
Is this just the start for us Brits?.
Now thats comedy at it’s best.

I mentioned Benny but Laurel and Hardy were a pair. Chaplin never really caught me, compared to Keaton and Lloyd and I suppose someone was bound to get a dig at Bush – yawn, yawn…….

I think Peter Kay has been mentioned in some earlier posts and has had a bit of a kicking from some of us, less for the sitcoms, more for the stand-up. Watched Father ted once and that was it. Dreadful.

My problem with Peter Kay’s stand up is he has come over very lazy and turned out the same jokes over several DVDs, That I feel insults the public and his fans and he has become such a disapointment.

Father Ted is an interesting one as so many people have said the same opinion and only watched the one show and rated it as awful. I did become a fan of it after seeing a few episodes I find it a good bit of escapism really.

Sitcom wise until shows like “Miranda” and “Not going out” came around, I found very little of the more modern sitcom shows worth while, these two shows are not classics at all but are fun without being too vulgar.

This has to be a first for me, as apart from J Carrott, I agree with everything you have said.

Thanks, I don’t even always agree with myself 😀

Actually while I’m on the subject of brilliantly written modern sitcoms, what about Father Ted and stand up comedian Ardal O’Hanlon (plus countless Irish stand ups making short appearances), not to mention the very talented and much missed Dermot Morgan aswel as Pauline McLynn, and Frank Kelly, even Graham Norton is good in it!

Ferlaterly indeed!

I’m quite surprised that no one has mentioned Peter Kay?
Very funny stand up without being blue, and Phoenix Nights is right up there as one of the greatest modern sitcoms with its sublty funny and reverential treatment of the northern working man club scene.

I’ve seen lots of comedians over the years, old school and new school. I admire the ones that can make me laugh without using foul language, although used in moderation it can be funny (Lee Mack for example). Tom O’Connor had me crying with laughter at one of his shows without saying a single swear word. Tommy cooper was great and I like Tim Vine, similar pun type jokes to TC. Some of Tim’s jokes have been mistaken as TC’s even though they were written well after TC died. really silly humour which I love. Another I like from todays crowd is John Bishop, naughty but not vulgar.

I thought that Les Dawson was funny at times, whereas Tommy Cooper only had to walk onto the stage, say nothing, and people would start laughing. Russ Abbot was very funny in his own right. 😀

Also saw Ken Dodd there too, another 2 hour show…..now he really did split your sides, with mostly clean humour.

You were short changed – or did you leave because you’d booked a taxi.

I saw him in Wolverhampton, my parents were due to see him, but my mom was off colour and rather than waste the tickets, I went with my dad, not sure what to expect. Doddy started off by telling the audience to cancell any booked taxis, as he didn’t intend finishing by ten, it was gone twelve by the time he finished and had me laughing for most of the time, if anyone gets a chance to see him live – go!

As to US (musical) comics, a couple that I like are Tom Lehrer:

I think that’s Fly Girl herself, actually.

It was a brave move of Carrot to do that family sitcom 2 years ago, with the disabled kid in the wheelchair.
It was relatively good, watchable. But probably too intellectual for the requirements of the canned laughter/ 30 seconds concentration span audiences which constitute to the viewing figs.

Fly Girl….who is the Actress in your Avatar thingy? Sure I’ve seen her on TV.

For me its Dave Allen,Bob Monkhouse,Jasper Carrott and more recently Jack Dee and Lee Evans away from standup Ronnie Barker as Arkwright was genius “ggggranville fetch your cloth”

Particularly if you were unfortunate enough to witness his few “solo” performances. For a devotee like me it was deeply saddening.:(
