Having been talking to an old workmate, we both got onto the subject of the motorcycles we owned in the 60s and had quite a discussion on the best and the worst,we owned, so for a change of the usual subjects which seem to draw some rather unwanted comments, I thought we would give this a go.
My first was an Indian, gate change on the fuel tank, what was yours. Worst one I had a Sunbeam s8.shaft drive.Favourite Douglas Dragonfly, even though it leaked more oil than is drilled from an oil well in a day!!

Bought a Honda C50 whilst at RAF Cottesmore 1975, following day rode it the 100 miles down the A1 to London, across Tower bridge and on to my home town of Maidstone (another 40 miles). My dad was gobsmacked!!
I returned back to base the following day. (I was a bit saddle sore:))
My favorite was recently sold, Fazer 600 in black that was used to commute from Newquay to Plymouth every day to work. (600 miles a week)
I miss that bike.

I bet you were a bit more than saddle sore, however your story re the A1 brought back memories, when I had the Golden Arrow, I seized it up((Leave it to your imagination as to what caused that,” Was I realy doing that speed officer:D?”. had to have it re bored crank grind, heads skimmed, well you don’t need me to tell you, but I was told to run her in for a couple of hundred miles or so at no more than 30mph, living in Peterborough, it was as near as damn it 100 miles from The Smoke as we called it in those days, due to the smog,(You younger ones, ask your dad what smog was!) so I rode down to London and back, well there was hardly any traffic all the way down and all the way back, far different to these days, but once run in she went like a bomb, as it was a 2 stroke, we used to put Castrol R ?, I think it was in the petrol, as it made the exhaust smell like a real racing bike.
Those were the days, no crash helmet, but nevertheless a good idea when you got used to it, same as seat belts, felt strange at first but…..

Got to admit it my downright outright favourite without any doubt was a………..Dommie 99. the proverbial dogs whatsits. I.M.H.O. a bike before it’s time, mind you, the Manx Norton wasn’t all that bad.Another I had was an Aerial Golden Arrow, with it,s leading link forks, a real road hugger, and bend straightner.

My best mate had a beezer Gold Flash, we went out one day on it, and 20 miles away from home had a rear wheel puncture, ever tried pushing one of them for 20 miles,? absolute murder, but there again, one wouldnt have to these days.

I missed the 60’s but in 74 / 75ish I went from a Moped (Mobylette Super) to a Suzy 250 Hustler. The Mobylette was as heavy as the Suzy! (Nearly)
I always wanted a Triumph Tiger Cub.
….but I discovered cars instead.As for the Indian, you have of course seen the spectacular film “The Worlds fastest Indian”.
PeeDee, I am still looking for a 200cc Tiger Cub and have seen some on ebay, rather tatty and fetching stupid money.As for the Worlds fastest Indian, I have the DVD and when I get fed up, thats the one with Anthony Hopkins I watch,just proves money cant buy everything, contrary to popular belief. failing that, The Wild Geese where a gang of mercenairies are left stranded ………get it buy it, but watch it, a good film/

i missed all the brit bikes ( thank god !! ) although my bro had a bonneville ( but he was odd !! )
i had small jap sports bikes kawasaki kh250 , honda cb250n , and about 30 various smaller bikes
prefered 2 strokes especialy yamahas for being cheap , small , fast , and reliable
but most of all because oil stayed where it was put
most hated a four stroke kawasaki 200 hated it with a passion in a mad moment i swapped it for a suzuki gp100 that i’d customised with fairing paint and alloys many happy thousands of miles
the kawasaki broke down more than lindsay lohan !!
