WoW what a supurb day for a few older types to fly into Old Buckenham, and a few older photographers to capture the scene for you ??
A few of the “Best of British” to start with, some of the “other contenders” to follow at a later date ! Keith.

Very nostalgic for me – great pics
Hi Keith
Extremely nostalgic for me. I commenced my CPL training in an Auster, then flew occasionally in a Chipmunk and a Tiger Moth.
Aaah those were the days.
Thanks for the great pics.

I can account for the airbrakes’ effectiveness on the Leopard Moth.
In particular, it gets very exciting if they vibrate into the ‘open’ position on take-off!:diablo:
Great pics!

2) Can anyone tell me how effective (or not) the de Havilland idea of turning the struts side on to the airflow as airbrakes actually was?
As a user of the the said airbrakes, I can confirm that they have a mild effect on handling. I have seen written that they give a 3 degree change of nose down pitch when switched ‘on’ – as you’d expect, this is barely noticeable. However, where they are useful is on a calm day, when with bottom wings very close to the ground there is a build up of quite a ground cushion on landing, leading to a long float. The airbrakes reduce this float (a bit). In the cruise, they reduce IAS by about 7 or 8kts. I don’t know how effective they are on Puss and Leopard Moths, but they are longer, so presumably moreso than on the Hornet Moth.
Nice photos again Keith – I thought I took off from the hard, not the grass!

Very nice. I have two questions: 1) Was that our Moggy in G-ARNE? 2) Can anyone tell me how effective (or not) the de Havilland idea of turning the struts side on to the airflow as airbrakes actually was? I always get the impression that the surface area is insufficient to be very effective.

Keth
A pleasure. I’ve given David a CD of pics of stuff I’ve taken there in the past that hopefully he can use on Old Buck Shots

Two very rare machines there – the only Beagle E3 and one of only three Auster D6/180s ever built (the other UK aircraft being G-ARDJ)…..

Can’t beat the old days ‘eh’ Keith! Not a hi-viz in sight at least in the photos. You might have captured a forum member in a Chipmunk. Has 1373 got a registration?
Yes, it has. British registered as G-CBJG.

Right, can’t have enough trees but don’t bother trying to get them in focus, keep the focus on the subject, as you have done so well! 🙂

As promised a few more from the day …. these are a mixture of nationalities …. not necessarly the ‘Best of British’ …. one of the things I like about photography at Old Buckenham are the lovely variety of trees in the background, which look so good in early spring … such varied colours ….. what do you think ??
Keith 🙂

Seems to have been a good day all round, nice set again keith. The austers G-ARC and XP254 are good catches….cheers.JB:).These little fly-ins are far better in giving the enthusiast/photographer better opportunities than large events where access is often hampered by red tape and blinking cordons.:)
