Best type of camera

I’m interested in improving my camera equipment for this years airshow season.
I would like a good digitial camera that will get me good close up air to air shots. Would anyone care to recommend a type of camera and lens I should go for? Thanks.

The OP is talking about Air-to-Air shots don’t forget.

I must admit I’ve just noticed that, yes the Sigma is way too big for that.
But for airshows it is very god.

So it’ll have to be light, and maybe not enough room for a stonking great zoom?

What’s your current camera? Do you already have a DSLR? If so, then a new lense would be all you need. If not, what’s the budget, and would you mind buying second hand to open more options?

I do! Actually the shot is far sharper pre Photobucket treatment.

I use a Nikon D60 and Sigma 120-400, good nearer the budget end of the spectrum combination and gives good results.

Nice shot/photo, pleased you have no acess to an RPG with shots like that 😉

It copes well Peter, that Puma was I would say as far as a crowd line to mid runway position when I took it, alomst at full zoom I seem to remember.
I very rarely go to airshows but use it at work (as above) where its one problem is that I can’t fit large aircraft in at the zoomed out position.

How well does that Sigma 120-400mm do with flying shots when the subject matter is further away, say at an airshow, when the subject matter is moving? Before I sold it, I had a D90 with a 50-500mm and struggled with getting nice clear shots like the one above.
