Best value for money.

Circumstances dictate that I haven’t been able to get to any airshows for the last four years now. I can’t see that changing in the near future but I would like to put in a word for Old Warden.

I was a regular for three years and for two seasons I never missed a single show. Moggy is right, if you like old, slow and relaxing then OW really does tick all the boxes. In such an intimate environment where you really are close to the action, everything feels more immediate, more vibrant. The sounds and smells excite the imagination. Evening shows can be truly spectacular. As the breeze dies and the light gradually begins to fade, OW really is transported back to the 1930’s and before. Having seen the delights of the Collection displayed in what could be described as a natural theatre, don’t rush away. You may see the Edwardians flying, an impressive sight to see them in the air whilst aeroplanes of 100 years later drift by quietly on their way to Stansted. Linger still and in the quietness of the dusk listen to the engines as they tick and cool, the steady rumble of tyres across the gravel as the aircraft return to the hangars.

If there’s one word to describe the Shuttleworth Collection at Old Warden then it can only be magical.

I am used to Carol in ‘pilot’ mode. Very business-like and a great flyer or right-seater.

When she told me she planned on turning up to OW in her ‘Goth’ persona I wasn’t quite sure what to expect.

Whatever I had expected she exceeded it. In the pic you can’t see the ra-ra skirt, fishnets, great goth boots and pint glass of red wine based on a pewter bat that she carried the full length of the flightline.

The Shuttleworth Collection fits the bill for old and slow with aeroplanes going back a century and shows every couple of weeks during the season

I can’t believe Robbo is the first / only to highlight the sublime Shuttleworth / Old Warden.

About £20 to get in. Park up in a field, lay your picnic rug out near the car and have a blissful 1920’s picnic with aircraft flying all round you.

If you really can be bothered then a walk down to the crowdline fence gets you a million miles closer to the aircraft flying a beautiful display line (which shows off their topside as they go round the corner) than ever you will get at any of the big shows.

Fascinating hangar displays and a lovely crowd. Even the occasional goth to liven up the proceedings.

(This one my pilot friend Carol, not to be confused with the regular Polythene Pam)

I would hazard a guess Scott, that that will be a freebee as you are connected to the ATC, Of which, I was a member of 115 Sdrn for some years.

its not mate, although that would be nice, its about £20 per person, plus the fee for the transport to get there, a full coach would cost £80 to hire

if anyone is planning on Sunderland airshow this year, let me know…and if your up for the full weekend, you could visit NEAM on the friday and watch the aircraft doing practice runs

Hi Robbo. I didn’t know she did night runs. When I last went, about 2 yrs ago, I spoke to one of the Panton brothers, and he let myself and grand son look inside,It was great hearing her start up, prior to doing a Taxing run, I love that photo you posted, think that should be on the Nostalgia Post, it certainly brings back memories to me.
