Beverly Vs Vulcan

It seems like the Beverley at the Museum of Army Transport might well be under a threat of scrapping again . The hypothetical question is faced with a request for £1 million to move the Beverley to another museum and house her or to put the money
into the airworthy restoration of a Vulcan who would you give the money to ?
To add a decided edge to it the one that is unsuccessful is
‘saucepans’ !

hypotheticaly

1st Restore the beverly to airworthiness :rolleyes:

2nd get the vulcan back in flying trim 😎

3rd get a lightning back from S A

Hypotheticaly u could tank the lightning from the vulcan with the beverly being the support aircraft. All the aircraft could do displayes and be a kind of cold war memorial (hypotheticaly)

Beverly or Vulcan? Mmm. . . Bev I reckon. As has been said (above) it’s a unique aircraft, its size for one thing.

Imagine if it could be brought back to taxying state – Elvingdon maybe? – awesome sight, awesome sound. Could even be used to give the paying public taxy-ride “trips”, therefore an “earner”.

In fact, if its recovery was handled right you could hire it out to hold an airshow inside it on a wet day! :rolleyes:

What we cant let the planks get hold of her.

she is british and should remain here in britian no matter what the cost, they scrapped XB261 at Southend then Hendons and now possibly the last remaining one of her breed.

if the lottery stopped funding of the wacko projects and asked us the people who play the sodding thing what we want the money to go on then we would be ablke to save our heritage for the future and not have arty farty snobs telling us what we have to have our money spent on

it will be a disater for the UK if she has to go state side to surrive not that I think she will think of the cost of trasportation, and what the **** has a Beverley got to do with the CAF?

Then someone better start taking to the museum or its recievers to secure a fine freighter. The price of scrap is low at the mo, so scrapping could prove costly. Action soon or she will be gone. Mind you I have been saying that about the Blackpool Vulcan for years and the ruddy thing is still there!

Was reading about the Beverley in a local Beverly newspaper today, it said something about the Confederate Air Force being interested in the aircraft. The museum is closed for good, there aren’t enough funds to upgrade the museum and keep it open due to falling visitor numbers.

I’d definitely choose to save the Beverley… it’s unique!

The question is hypothetical. There are real concerns for the Beverley and have been for a number of years. Recent reports
are regarding the viability of the building. All that is immaterial
however because I could have posed the same question in the late eighties when we had three of them and the future seemed
assured for them.
My real concerns are that aircraft preservation in the U.K can be very hit or miss and quite often significant types have
been scrapped simply because of lack of public appeal rather
than on it’s technicall merits.
Putting the question in such a way that it clearly divides
opinion is a good way of deciding how our priorities towards the preservation of large aircraft should be aimed.
The HLF has been roundly criticised in the past for the way they fund some projects but not others – by putting people almost in the same position as they are its interesting to see that
a project which would involve the long term preservation of a large aircraft seems to win more votes than a flying project.
However being a forum of enthusiasts it would tend to reflect in this . I would be interesting to know what the public split would be on the same question posed ‘Lightning Vs Vulcan’
-which machine still holds the public’s attention enough to see it fly again.

Don’t mention Cardington! DVLA. Gives me the jitters. I don’t think though that it is about where to move it to, its about ‘moving’ it. Or am I getting this all wrong? Is it really the last of its kind? If it is perhaps it should be preserved but I really want to see that Vulcan fly again. On the other hand whats the point if you only get to see it fly for a season or two?

One other thing. I am kind of hoping airships become commercially viable again and Cardington is the current favourite place to base them. No I think Cosford should sort it out but again, they turned down an SR71 for lack of space.

What are the FACTS on this situation? Do we actually know that the museum is shut for good or is it a temporary closure. If it has it doesnt mean the end to the Beverley. If those in charge of the museum/aircraft own the land then they may have time to consider any possible rescue plans.

I know that the Vulcan is a very emotive subject, but at least one example of the this beautiful old freighter should be preserved.
