Fantastic job!

I would love to see a tail chase between the DB powered 109 and and say a Mk9 Spit at a UK airshow especially Legends. I don’t mind which one is the quarry and which one is the chaser.

It’s important to keep at least a few 109s flying with their original engines. Even though I still enjoy seeing a Buchon flying at an airshow.

Was lucky enough to witness Black 6 being chased by a Mk IX Spitfire at Middle Wallop some time ago. Might have a photo somewhere, which I’ll try to find – well predigital I’m afraid!

🙁 Looks like he lost it twice,at the top and on the way down–lucky man.I thought it was said that the Merlin sounded smooth a Griffon raw and the DB sounded like a bag of nails rattling around 🙂 .When it was running well it did sound harsher but still nice.

That was the one which frightened the crap out of me at La Ferte in 2005, when the then-owner lost control at low level. A good job the airfield there is on a hill…

I remember a couple of years ago, one of the commentators at Legends said that the Griffon sounds as though it’s about to fail and the Merlin sounds as though it just has. Compared with either of those the Daimler sounds as though it failed over London and was persuaded to keep running long enough to get back across the channel.

To be precise, none of these are flying with their original engines, as they are all re-engined Buchons.

Didn’t one of them appear at a RIAT some years back?

Yes, IIRC it was D-FWME G-4 Red 7

If you look at photos of their workshop, they have three (the ex-Hans Dittes one, and their own D-FMBB, as well as ‘Red 7’), from which they struggle to keep just one airworthy on occasion. A difficult undertaking.

You are right with your assessment. Though they had some quite unlucky coincidences, so it took some time to get at least one into the air again. D-FMBB, their G-6 FM+BB, was intended to get a main overhaul due to having flown the most hours of all 3. Then D-FDME, their G-10 Yellow 3 (formerly Black 2), had major engine problems, so the DB had to be overhauled as well. They had their Bf 108 in for overhaul as well as the Argus engine. Finally last years bellylanding of D-FWME, their G-4 Red 7, necessitated repairs and engine check as well. I submit some pics taken by my friend Harald Wiegand last week at their facility. Copyright of all pics: Harald Wiegand. BTW he uploaded some nice videoclips to FB as well. If you want to see all of his pics, you can do by following this link:

Thanks Michael,
Yes that was awesome, and a relatively quick rebuild too.

Great video! Can’t help hoping they might be persuaded to visit Legends one year, as I’ve never seen a DB-powered ‘109’ fly. Some of us are too young to remember Black 6!
