I have just returned from the Aero 2005 aviation fair at Friedrichshafen on the shores of the Bodensee. Although principally a general-aviation event there was a small airshow with a few warbirds. Most interesting was the public debut of Red 7/D-FWME, a Hispano that was rebuilt to 109G standard, including a DB605 enigine and which first flew in august of last year. Great to see this aircraft fly, first time ever I saw a 109 of any version fly or heard the magnificent sound of a DB605, a really great start to the season.
It was said that one member of the restorationteam recently assisted the Messerschmidt Foundation at Manching to get the engine of their 109G-10 running again, which apparently was accomplished recently. It was said that the airshow at the Hahnweide in Germany , later this year, might now witness the appearance of two 109’s with DB’s.
Now only one question remains to be answered.

These engines were in exhibition hall A5. They are from the CASA 2.111
(Deutsches Museum München). The plane was flying in the film ´BoB`.

Thanks for the info – I would love to see this trio in the air together 🙂

What about D-FMBB? The ‘109G-6/Buchon conversion?
Somebody working at its home base (Manching, north of Munich) reported in the forum in my signature that it flew again on 06.04.2005

The number you have quoted is the part nos for the fin or Seitenflosse Vollst as it is called in the bf 109 spares manual
The fin would have been replaced during the rebuild to suit the DB engine so it could be original

No I haven’t. Where were these?
Regarding D-FWME, although it is a converted Buchon the fin carries a dataplate stating it is a 109G from the Wiener Neustadt plant (w.nr. 8.109.312 IIRC). As far as I know this does not fit into any of the known w/nr-series used for the 109. Is this a data-plate for the fin only, and if so is this fin original or is this data-plate a fake?

Nice pics, Kenneth. D-FWME never fails to impress 🙂

Here are some pics of mine of D-FWME at Friedrichshafen, where safety distances and altitudes are always enormous.
Three other highlights in the otherwise rather modest airshow were one of only two remaining Potez 60 (notice the cowling which popped open in flight), a beautiful Udet U12 Flamingo replica powered by a Siemens-Halske Sh14 and Bf109-ace Walther Eichorn in a L-29 in formation with his son in a Harvard.

Guaranteed it would have been up on here like a shot if it had!
Provided anybody had been there to see it of course!!!!!

Feel free to post some photo’s if you can…. 🙂
Nothing like the sound of a 109 with a DB airborne!
By: DazDaMan - 24th April 2005 at 15:44
That last one was undergoing taxiing runs, IIRC, at Wattisham, and had not yet flown. Guaranteed it would have been up on here like a shot if it had!
Think it will be flying in the States, however.

Could get no news on the G-6 I’m afraid.
Now I’m thinking about news on 109’s, the commentator at the show mentioned the fact that outside of Germany there were two other 109’s with DB’s in airworthy condition, one being the E in Canada, the other being the one undergoing engine-runs in the UK a few months ago. I am not 100% sure but I believe the commentator mentioned that the last one had actually flown. Any news on the whereabouts of this one?

Good to hear about D-FEHD, though, as this one has been out of the sky for a while 🙂

To be or not to be?
Great news about the G-10. It has been a while since this plane flew. It is nic to hear they are doing a serious effort to bring it back in good condition. 🙂
Cheers,
