According to my grandfather, he spotted a Bf109 over Bracknell sometime during the day on 31st July. Apparently, he recognised the engine sound(!).
Was one of the German-registered ‘109s over? Or did he, in fact, spot a ‘108?? My gran seems to say the same thing, but let’s face it I don’t think she can tell her rear orifice from a hole in the ground, never mind a Messerschmitt 109 from a Cessna! I think the closest my grandad (and myself, for that matter!) have come to a real ‘109 was seeing the OFMC’s lamented Buchon dogfighting with MH434 over East Fortune in 1998!
Any ideas? I don’t think it was the Real Aeroplane Co’s Buchon somehow!

My local is a Brakespears pub and the only thing I find worth drinking with their name on is the ‘live organic’, bottled and about 5. something %. Nice beer but gives you (does me anyway!!) cronic wind.
Talking of beer, one of my favourites, not because of its name, is Shepherd and Neames Spitfire , I always stock it at home (Sainsbury’s and Waitrose have cases of 12 pints on offer at £13 at the moment-excellent value) and yesterday coming back from family day out in Dorset I happened across a pub near Boscome Down(the Crown) that sold draught Spitfire, cooled just enough not to ruin the taste but brilliant for quenching the thirst on a stinking hot day, the food was excellent too, so 10/10 to the Crown. Whats more my wife saw how much I was enjoying the beer that she offered to drive the rest of the journey, excellent day out.
Boozy bugger, but I agree about S&N’s Spitfire, nice brew

“In fact that would be an interesting bit of research. I wonder who was the most unsuccessful pilot of WW2 i.e. who was shot down the most times without being killed. Bet someone knows the answer…”
Just off the top of my head,I remeber Jackie Mann, the Battle of Britain Spitfire pilot and later a Beirut hostage was shot down no less than six times, being very badly burnt on one occasion after gliding his burning Spit most of the way across the Channel before belly landing.Six times must come pretty close to a record, atleast for a British pilot.I seem to remember Hans-Ulrich Rudel, the highly decorated Ju87 pilot was shot down more times than even this, but not certain of the total.
Good luck with the servicability of the Me108 Simon, look forward to seeing her sometime soon. 🙂

Thanks guys,
I think the best chance we have against the Spit is making him stall out of the chase. We force them to fly so slow poor chaps!! In fact I spoke to a US 108 pilot who gets abused by Mustangs in a similar fashion and he brags about being the most unsuccessful fighter pilot in history. He gets shot down on average 3 times a week during the display season!!
In fact that would be an interesting bit of research. I wonder who was the most unsuccessful pilot of WW2 i.e. who was shot down the most times without being killed. Bet someone knows the answer…

Sorry, I should have said “simulated gunfire from a Spit” 😉
By: Kenneth - 4th September 2003 at 21:03
I sure as hell hope the East Fortune lot book you next year for a display, with or without the accompanying gunfire from a Spit, I don’t mind
I hope for you without, it is an incredibly rare aircraft in its own right, only about a dozen Bf 108 exist worldwide (not counting the Nord 1002).

Maybe it was you after all! I sure as hell hope the East Fortune lot book you next year for a display, with or without the accompanying gunfire from a Spit, I don’t mind! 😉
If they had me on the staff, they would, anyway! 😉

Nearly all sorted. Very annoying as we missed the whole of the 2003 season due to this problem. The aircraft should be 100% as the last of the decent flying weather disappears..
Always next year…

TomW is, I believe the expert in that neck of the woods maybe he could add more.(suspect MoggyC may have been involved with this, since its in close proximity to Brakspear’s brewery…..:D;) )
Could have been me flying ME108, G-ETME, based White Waltham. I live in Binfield which is half way between Bracknell and White Waltham and I sometimes “buzz” the house on the way home (above 500ft of course) in a “put the kettle on…” kind of way..

I like the way this is developing into a beer and food thread.
I might just be tempted to post a ‘whats you favorite beer’ poll on the open forum.

Swan and fish in the same sentence? In that case, we must mention the Swan Inn at Barnby, Suffolk. Owned by Donny Cole, the Lowestoft fish merchant, the Barnby Swan is impossible to book on a weekend for months – but the best bloody fish eating place about. I’m over there on Thursday night for a splash-out.
Beer’s pretty standard fare from memory – but the food is great. Worth the drive for you Chris.
109’s? Cool. (Just to have some pretence of historical aviation).

And I thought it was me that had been to the pub !!.
Manonthefence-
You know I think thats the only pub in Sutton that I never been into, or at least I can’t remember it. I have been in the Plough many times, the Swan quite a bit a few years back and the Fish to eat, but can’t remember the G & D. It looks nice and oldy worldy from the outside, perhaps I’l pop in one day.
So you live in the big mansion opposite – wow!!!.

Yes, and as the smaller Airbus aircraft are all built in Germany, it may well resemble a Bf109.
In which case, we may have accidentally solved the mystery which created this thread in the first place:D 😀

Is that the retro styled, piston engined, propellor driven Airbus thats only available in camoflage schemes?

Never been in there. If you ever find yourself in the George and Dragon in Sutton Courtenay I’m over the road. They know me in the pub.

Talking of which I’m out your way tonight, I’m at the Red Lion Drayton, not such a good pint (Greene King rubbish) but a pretty reasonable pub.
