'Big Bird' ? at Duxford.

Made a quick visit to Duxford today and was impressed with the Swordfish restoration, I never realised how big the ‘bird’ was,. It would be nice to see this airframe on the flight line at ‘Flying Legends’ a perfect showcase for the work put in by the restoration crew. A few images are attached.

It was a training scheme to make it more conspicuous during daylight, a bit like the Hawks and Tucanos nowadays

Italian port of Taronto was one of the biggies, don’t think they were painted balck for that though.

What is the idea of it being all black? Did they make torpedo raids at night? If so, where?

Looks stunning.

In agreement with you Damien, the’Blackfish’ is looking really good, looks like it wont be long before it is finished, does anybody know if there will be a similar roll out ceremony to the Mosquito if so when ? Acouple of shots from today.

Looks EXACTLY like the background of the hangar, does’nt it? Probably modern computer graphic camo, like they’re doing for the soldiers nowadays…

Saw the Swoprdfish at DX in 2000 performing with the ‘Diamond Nine’ gang in their Tiger Moths…the Swordfish appeared to be almost 3 times the size of the Moths….amazingly big plane….glad to have seen one fly and hope to again…

Got the same impression from the SBD Dauntless first time I saw it…thought to myself “This thing is a third again as big as a T-6!”, did’nt expect it to be that way….

Particularly in the moody black scheme. Should be awesome when fully marked up.

The camoflage on the fin seems remarkably effective….

LOL 😀
