Reading the Gnat ‘database’ in Aeroplane Monthly reminded me of the interest stirred up by Petter’s little masterpiece and the way he wanted to reverse the trend for bigger and bigger fighters.
Which brings me to the point, and that is: why ARE modern fighters so big?
Avionics, radar, electrical and weapons systems are now tiny, engines are more powerful for a given size and weight, airframes are largely composite and yet we have even bigger monsters in the air. So why is that?
