Big question..

Something I have always wondered about..

How do creationists explain all the pre-historic fossils found in the Earth that date back MILLIONS of years?

Regards, Glenn.

RE: The Big Answer..

Personally, I was always amazed by the “Witness of Jehovah” (Don’t know how they call themselves in english)
One, i was working (renovating a house) when they came ringing at the door, and asking me if I believed… Thet day, i think I was in a bad mood, as I answered them that they arrived too late. They asked “why?” (as expected), and I answered that the electrical company already came 2 days earlier to bring us “the light”. I haven’t seen them anymore after that.

Before that, I was at home studying for a maths exam when they came, and asked me if I believed and wanted to be saved, and so on, I was bored from my study, and decided to chat a bit (strange idea, you’d tell me). Than came the sentence 40000 people will only be saved at the end of days. My question, then, was, “Aaaand, how many are you in your sect?” The answer: “we are numerous.” Quastion again “More that 40000?” Answer: “For sure”. And final question: “And do you *really* believed that YOU will be in the 40000?” And they left 🙂

I always have fun with them, even if that’s not fair.

RE: The Big Answer..

I do have an interesting idea about the dinosaurs. When adam and eve were expelled from the garden, God cursed satan who was taking the form a serpent by saying that serpents would no longer walk on earth but crawl on their bellys and eat the dust of the earth. Hence you nolonger have walking dinosaurs, and every reptile I can think of does crawl with its belly on the ground.

The Big Answer..

And the fossils were placed there by Slartibartfast, just like he made the prize-winning fjords in Norway.

All we’re here on earth for is to find the ultimate question, guided by the wonderful intellect of mice!

RE: Big question..

I don’t have the answer to your original question Glenn but I would like to add this, a friend of mine had a window cleaner who was a Jehovah’s Witness and he believed that the dinosaur fossils were a worldwide government conspiracy designed to discredit various faiths, wether this was a general view or just his opinion I don’t know, but an odd opinion to hold all the same.

RE: Now this I gotta hear

Steady on kev.

The most dangerous religious fanatics are those who interpret the Bible (or Koran or whatever) literally. I don’t think it’s meant to be taken as gospel truth, more as an illustration of some ideas.

Besides, you’re right. The human race was originally incestuous, sort of. It depends on definition. People in Africa have the greatest amount of genetic variation, whereas us Westerners are closer to each other genetically. Genetic diversity within a race is an indication of age; the older a race, the more varied it is.

On a more general point, it is incorrect to apply our “Western” morality to any other situation; be it historic or even present day as applied to non-Western races.

RE: Now this I gotta hear

Ja,

“And if Adam and Eve were the first people, then what of the cave man?”

Forget the caveman! If Adam and Eve were the first people that would mean that their children would have to procreate to ensure the survival of the species. Therefore the whole human race is based on a series of incestuous relationships. So, does the bible condone this? Is this why Catholic priests (in particular) have been allowed to get away with child molestation for so many years?

I personally want nothing to do with a God who believes this can be right.

RE: Big question..

GeForce,

I know about Carbon dating, Geological boundaries, and molecular composition and all that. I am still wanting to know what the followers of creation have to say about it all.

Regards, Glenn.

RE: Big question..

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 17-07-02 AT 10:51 AM (GMT)]Well, first of all there’s the C-14 method.

In an organic system, apart from ‘stable’ Carbon (C-12), there’s also C-14, Carbon which is radioactif, the the ageing process of C-14 is always slowed down by a couple of thousands years (if not a million years). So by comparing the amount of C-14 to normal C-12 (which will age normally), a scientist can find out how old a fossil is (the more C-14 there is, the older the fossil is). BTW, Carbon is found in any organic system, thus in every creature.

Carbon is a very stable atom (look at illustration). Not too many electrons can be added to the atom (or ion if it carries more neutrons/protons than electrons). Electrons are always located at the outerlayers of an atom. Water (H) is very unstable for example, because more electrons can be added. Carbon (atomnumber 6 or at the 6th row of the Mendeljev table) is the best choise to determine the age of a creature, not only because it exceeds the quantity of any other atom in a creature, but because of its stability.

One can also try to determine the age of a fossil by investigating the geographical layers in the earth. For Example if you find a fossil at 70 feet deep, it should be easy to find out how old that layer is and when you know that, the rest is easy. This is however, not as accurate as the C-14 method.

Before darwinism, there was the theory of creationism, “god created man”. This was mainly during the classic era (Greece and Rome). During the Middle Ages, there was the “generatio spontanea”. A new species could be formed without the need of another species. This was however wrong, and Darwin discovered that a new species can only erupt thanks to mutation (germinal or reproductive mutation) from another species.

Hope that helps a bit! Sorry for my bad English, but scientific language is really difficult if English is not your mother tongue.
