RE: Biggest aircraft

I agree with you Comet, Russian planes are very photogenic. Specially the Il-62, its an awsome looking jet. Although terrible from inside.

RE: Biggest aircraft

I would LOVE to see the AN225. I saw the AN124 at Manchester in June, and for a fan of Russian-types (purely for photographic reasons, I’ve never been on one, and I think they are interesting) that was a great sight. If I’d have been in Paris a week later than I was, I would have seen the 225, but I just missed the airshow, and I was disappointed about that!!:-)

RE: Biggest aircraft

Well….the Hughes’s spruce goose just flew once….so it cant be compared with the An 225 as it flys at regular basis. But it did have a larger wingspan than of the An 225. Well….of course Russians have never made more elegent looking aircrafts than Boeing or Airbus in commercial aviation sector. Although i really like the looks of the Il-62M, just the looks.

RE: Biggest aircraft

I believe I read that Howard Hughes’s spruce goose had a greater wing span than the An 225, but in practical terms, the An 225 is much bigger. I believe it was specifically designed to transport the defunct Russian space shuttle the Braun, which was a copy of the NASA shuttle. The An 225 looks good at air shows, whereas the An 124 actually earns it’s keep transporting oversize industrial loads.
The An 124 is a marvel of Russian aironautical engineering inspired by that US marvel, the C-5 Galaxy which flew 15 years before the An 124. Of course the An 124 was made slightly larger than the C-5 but is less handy and not as good looking. Whats that old expression: immatation is the sincerest form of flattery?

When measuring aircraft size you use wingspan to determine which is the largest, so a double deck is of no importance. The AN-225 flew for the first time quite a while ago, it was withdrawn from service though and only recently came back to life. New aircraft are also being constructed to join the single example currently flying.

RE: Biggest aircraft in the world???

It’s great to see the big fella’ back in the air. The 225 (and the 124) are true marvels of auronautical engineering, and no matter what some people say, the Russians sure can build some of the best aircraft in the world.

Now, please can we have Concorde flying again?

RE: Biggest aircraft in the world???

I think it depends what you mean by biggest, e.g tallest, widest, largest payload etc

RE: Biggest aircraft in the world???

Ir shall be used by a joint Russian / US company for oversized transportation. If everything goes well, they plan to finish the second one, and maybe to build a third…

I hope they can keep the 225 airworthy for a long time. There will always be need for oversized air transportation, I think.

RE: Biggest aircraft in the world???

The AN 225 is the largest aircraft in the world, it flew recently if i am not wrong. The An 124 is the worlds largest aircraft in production as there is only one An 225 Mriya. The A380 cannot be the largets jet as it has not flown yet. Even when it flies it wont be close to the An 124 or the An 225. Here are the stats of the An 225 and the An 124.

AN 125:
Dimensions:
Length: 275 ft 7 in(84 m)
Wingspan: 290ft (88.4m)
Height: 59 ft 8 in (18.2m)

Weights
Max T/O: 1 322 750 lbs (600 000kg)
Payload: 551 150 lb(250 000kg)

Performance:
max Speed: 528 mph
Range: 15 400km, 4500km with max payload.
Powerplant: six ZMKB D 18 turbfans.
Thrust: 309 540lb(1377kN)

AN 124:
Dimensions:
Length: 226 ft 8 in(69.1 m)
Wingspan: 240 ft 5 in(73.3 m)
Height: 68ft 2 in (20.8m)

Weights:
Max T/o: 892 872 lb (405 000 kg)
Payload: 330 693 lb(150 000 kg)

Performance:
Max Speed: 537 mph
Range: 16 500km, 4500 km with max payload.
Powerplant: four ZKMB Progress D-18T turbofans
Thrust: 206 360lb (918 kN)

RE: Biggest aircraft in the world???

Well, as far as I know, it flies again, they’ve refitted it with engines..

Or at least, it will be flying again this summer.
Taken from Flugrevue, Spezialausgabe Superlative der Luftfahrt 3 that came out this week.

RE: Biggest aircraft in the world???

I may be clutching at straws here, but I thought the AN-225 is no longer flying and has been placed in long term storage. If that is the case, that would make the baby(!) brother, An-124, the largest aircraft currently flying.

Can anyone confirm if maybe the An-225 is flying again? This giant is a fantistic aircraft.
