Biggin Hill Airshow Question

I see Biggin Hill has 5 Hurricanes scheduled to attend this year –

Hurricane MK I (R4118)
Hurricane Mk IIb (BE505)
Hurricane Mk IIc (LF363)
Hurricane Mk IIc (PZ 865)
Hurricane XIIa (G-HURRI)

Is this the largest gathering of Hurricanes in recent times?

Perhaps someone should put a Stuka ‘siren’ on a modern plane and put it into a dive so we could hear would it would have sounded like?

There is a later mark on display in Hendon, but that is about it….I think, though I am sure someone will correct me. I did hear of one a few years ago, but nothing became of it.

I agree, simply being able to see these wonderful aircraft is simply fantastic and should never be taken for granted. I have worked with R4118 for 6 years now and really feel privilaged in what I do. Haveing a very nice owner, like Peter Vacher, is alway a great bonus too!

i too had heard about a stuka being restored

again never heard anything other then the start

shame

I tell you what almost brought a tear to my eye – a recording broadcast over the PA of James Nicholson describing the action in which he won his VC, all the while Spitfires and Hurricanes flying overhead – very well put together.

I’d like to find a copy of that monologue – I think it’s going on my iPod.

I couldn’t get to the show this year but living a mile away I got to see quite a bit. But the highlight for me was, not the Typhoon, not the VC10 (which i don’t remember seeing at Biggin before), but when the 4 Spits and 4 Hurricanes flew directly over my house. Twice, On BOTH days. Why does something like that bring tears to my eyes?

When was the last time there were as many airworthy Hurricanes as there are now?

Why not, Tony? The slow, rather dignified display by the Spit and the Typhoon was also quite moving. It effectively bridged the 70 years and made the point that it is still about airmen, and other servicemen, of course, fighting and dying for their country.

I am told that on the second day, there was the massed attack sequence formation with more Hurricanes in it than Spits. 4:3, and even then there was still one other Hurri on the ground.
I never thought i’d see that day.

Please remember the raffle for a ground crew place on R4118 at the Shoreham airshow with me that is going on at www.raffle.it/hurricane.

I suppose you are right – I am easily pleased and just grateful to be able to see any of them. Funnily enough my grandson (7) wanted to know if there were any Stukas. Mmm – nice thought. In fact are there any static Stukas which could conceivably be restored to flying condition?

Oh, I don’t know, Simon – I thought the whole BoB sequence was very well put together and executed and deservedly got the applause that followed. My grandson was in awe!:)

Trouble was that they insisted on puting a Spitfire and a Hurricane up together and I think it would have been nicer to put all the Hurricanes up together. The sequence was around 40 minutes long. It was nice to see though. Really needs a Stuka or 2??. Now there is something.

Still a very noisey show next week. Will be there with R4118. Not sure at the moment what the program will be??

I think I’m safe in saying that we had all the UK’s airworthy Hurricanes together for the first time. Certainly I don’t recall seeing more than 5 airworthy Hurricanes together.

Bear in mind that we used to have G-ORGI and the TFC IV over here and I seem to recall a Hurricane gathering of a similar number .

Would be nice if they are intending to get all 5 in the air at the same time.

You’d probably have to go back to the filming of Angel One Five for the last time that happened…and did they even have 5 then…?

I would dearly love to see all of the UK’s airworthy Hurricanes doing a mass BofB style scramble from DX’s grass at Legends followed by a spiral battle climb to angels ?? demo and return to home curved approach. Real evocotive period stuff not ‘modern’ aeros demos.

I was there both days as was ground crewing on R4118. Both days 5 hurricanes flew despite the BBMF having a brake bag issue and us having a coolant and magneto problem. Shame that they were not planning to do a 5 ship flypast though.

Nice to see the Hurricane attending in equal numbers to the Spitfire.

Particularly in this 70th Anniversary Year.
