Can someone tell me what planes have been used for ‘guarding the gates’ at Biggin Hill?
Also, is it true that Douglas Bader flew the first Spitfire guardian into Biggin?
And last, what do the markings on the present models represent?

Thank you Firebird. I am trying to get some serious answers here.
Err……sorry, my answer wasn’t in the least bit serious.
Just humorously reposting to Tangmere’s amusing post, but best not go there I suppose……:o

Thanks Mark12. Reliable as ever.
Wow! Is that all. I thought I was going to get a list of planes. I can now see why you posted the picture of LA226 on my other thread.

Rubbish. Douglas took time out from a stay at the Stork Hotel to secretly deliver it, have tea with Thelma in Sevenoaks, and then nip back to Colditz before the Goons noticed. 😀

Unlikely. Douglas Bader left the RAF in February 1946.
Spitfire SL674 was delivered from 9 MU to Biggin Hill on 11 September 1954.
At a Drumhead Service on 19 September 1954 it was not carrying an RAF serial and one might suppose the aircraft had been repainted at Biggin Hill for this occasion.
