Biggin Hill Hurricane repainted

Hurricane Mk.I AE977 has recently been repainted into the colours of a 601 Squadron machine P3886 U-FK. I also understand that 601 Squadron was an Eagle squadron flown by US pilots.

I would suggest that this is a change in markings, as opposed to a complete repaint – Thus the camouflage will have stayed the same as it was.

Thats what i am thinking Bruce. Mind you they have gone to the trouble of having an aluminium coloured panel behind the spinner just like the real P3886 did. Still its nice to see a different Squadron markings from the B of B period on a Hurricane. 🙂

It would appear whoever did the repaint did not do their homework either. The camouflage scheme of the original P3886 UF-K was completely the opposite of what it is now. I.E the A and B scheme camouflage system in use in 1940.

Perhaps UF-K not U-FK? UF was 601 Sq’s code: FK was 219 Sq. and not Hurricanes.

Not quite right mate, 601 wasn’t an Eagle squadron. Those were 71, 121 and 133 Sqns. 601 was an Aux AF sqn, “County of London”. Think it had a US pilot, Billy Fiske?

601 (County Of London) Squadron was a unit of the Royal Auxiliary Air Force. Often known as the ‘Millionaires Squadron’ because the founder members were mostly from the aristocracy, it saw action in the Battle of France and the Battle Of Britain.
P3886 carries the codes of Carl Davis when 601 was based at Tangmere in August of 1940. Davis was one of 11 Americans to fight in the Battle Of Britain, and was killed in action on September 6th 1940.
There’s a lot of history in those markings, I guess we will learn more by May 26th….
