Holy cow! Just seen this thread….

What a sad waste… it’s a tragedy. Think if the number of Lightnings that have been in there over the years. It’s a blessing that the resident lightning is kept outdoors.

Thank god no one was hurt.

Let’s hope it is a favourable outcome, with saving as much as possible in mind eh?

We have lost far too much of our Aviation Heritage – I wish we could turn back the clock 45 years?

The Hangars are all owned by private indivisuals who occupy them.
The damage is not as bad as it looks in the pictures and the walls have no damage at all.Even the paint hasnt come off.
I am no structural engineer but looking at the damage today to the roof there is only 3 small pieces of steel work which has slight twisting and the main supports are untouched but like i said i am no structural engineer so cannot guarantee the structures stability and strength.
The main burning point was the absestos and the wooden boards below the absestos.
Shall see what the outcome is tomorrow

:(That has upset me no end! I hate to see stuff used and abused, without any regard for it’s history! (Mind you, it’s the norm now isn’t it?)

From the look of the photos posted so far – and assuming its a rented hangar and assuming that the walls are okay at the burnt end – the roof will all come off to make it safe and it would be doubtful if it was replaced.

A new roof would be REALLY costly as the former structure would not be compliant with modern standards and requirements.

Sad, but its time to say goodbye.

Yeah it is.
Hopefully by the end of next month there will be more units available for rent on the technical park when some repairs and the bldgs have been painted 🙂

Nice to see the former RAF buildings being put to a productive use – I hope that they can get back into production quickly! 🙂

Hi
Just to confirm despite the news and papers it wasnt the plastic recycling firm that actually caught fire.
It is a company that makes recycling machinery .I cant say the cause of the fire but i can say it wasnt arson etc .

From one of the internal hangar pictures from this morning there seems to be a yellow coloured inclined conveyor in the foreground, which might indicate some sort of recycling equipment – looking at the intensity of the fire I would guess perhaps plastic recycling of some kind. Machinery fire??

Binbrook, considering where the fire was located other than lightning what else could cause an electrical fire up in that area?

There is no reasons for suspision and the fire is mainly to part of the roof without any structural damage .
Hardly any damage inside as i have been inside there today with the owners

Strikes me that the cause of the fire might be grounds for suspicion.

Why?

The H&S police are going to have a field day:eek:

Rightly so I’d say… Given the numbers of people still suffering from asbestosis. The risks are increased in this case because of the effects of fire on bonded asbestos!

Still, i hope the building can be saved. Given what happened at Hemswell, this could have been a lot worse.

Maybe the LA could raise funds for repair on the hangar under the previso that 724 can be put under cover once the damage is repaired…..

Worth a shot??

Now that is a good idea

Just removing the (burnt) asbestos will be a major operation.
