scampton

Well firstly Scampton is not being bulldozed under like bonibrook sadly is. But the main reason was that I thought there was mroe vintage jets based there. Elvington is out in my mind as they already have on static unless she is kept running there? Would be neat to see her go to brunty.

Any excuse for a photo.

Hi.
A photo of XR-724 with over wing tanks, it would be good to see three
Lightnings do fast runs but it’s probably to much expect

Hi Peter

Can you explain what the point of moving XR724 to Scampton would be. Their are no museums or nothing up their for it and I don’t think the RAF would like the idea to be honest.

The only people who might be able to keep it at Scampton would be HHA but they have their Hunters and the Bucc to worry about.

Elvington was mentioned as a good place to move this Lightning a while back and it would fit in well up their and plenty more people could view it every year.

Xr724

Has anyone been up close to see her lately? There was arecent thread on here that stated that she was looking very sorry for herself and had delamination appearing on one of the taiplanes?
SHe should either go to brunty or to scampton..

Its a shame they cannot move XR724 to another location as their is very little space left to taxi it around these days.

Just think if only it could be moved to Brunnty 3x Lightning and 3x Bucc (if XW544 gets its engiones rebuilt) all going down the runway together now that would be bloody good.

Great pics!
The Lightning that is currently at Binbrook is F.6 XR724, it was flown in from RAF Shawbury on 23rd July 1992.

Thanks for posting the pictures, cestrian. Brings back lots of memories. I do recall the airshow; very damp indeed. I got wet. The camera got wet. The car’s electrics got wet and it was a job to get it started. To cap it all, none of my pictures of the Lightning formations turned out. Still, it was all worth it!

Regards,

Paul

Lightning

Hi everyone
Do you not mean the Lightning that flew into Binbrook a few years ago owned by the Lightning Association and Adrian Cambell. This up to a year or so back was parked up near the 5 Squadron hangar and I have a video that I purchased at Waddington that goes with it.

Hope this helps

Great Pics Cestrian

Thanks for sharing. It is a damn shame that she went for scrap as she looked in very good shape. Pity she could not have been mounted near one of the schools instead of a fin!!.
I remember seeing them flying in 1986 on one of the last trips to the UK. they looked like they were practising for the final flight as there was at least 8 or 9 all tail chasing each other around the airfield. Wonderful sight and sound!

There is still a lightning up at Binbrook but Im unsure which one. I was at a rally (motorcars) which was using the remains of the old runways last year and a complete lightning was still visible by the old hangers, unfortunately due to marshalling duties I couldnt go for a wander to take a look.

There is still at least one (maybe two) lightning fins mounted on stone plinths in the front of the school yard in the village itself.

The Binbrook Gate-guard Lighting was F.3 XP748 which left Binbrook for Wembury 29/6/88,presumably for scrapping(W&R 12th edit.)There was also a Spitife F.22 PK664 on the gate which left for R.A.F.M. store at St.Athan 30/11/88.Photos were taken at the Last Lightning Show September 1987.
The Lightning had 5 Sqn markings on one side and 11 Sqn on the other.

There was a Lightning F3 XP748 (or something like that) on guard for a while but got scrapped i think when Binbrook was closing – think the remains went to a Range ie: Shoeburyness or Foulness possibly????

Waste of a good airframe as i believe it was in good nic at the time..

I dont remember their being a gate guard lightning at Binbrook just the tall vertical bit at the back which got donated to the local school, or was that the spitfire remains?
