Ok I know that the owners have their hands tied trying to look after the lightning outside but this recent pic makes me wonder how long she will last.

Someone mentioned about her being moved to brunty as a possibility but I think it will only be more difficult to look after her and still no hangar for her either?

Great to hear she will be getting some TLC this year!

There are are plans for some of us from the LPG to go over soon and give her a once over, waxoil, clean up etc and also do a recce to see what needs to be sorted prior to an anti det run some time before the end of 08.
That’s really good to hear.
We’ve recently moved our office up to Binbrook camp. I can offer access to a kettle, mugs and teabags galore :D. Also shelter from the bitter winter we suffer up hear on the Wolds which seems to start in September!

…..at present she’s stopping where she is. She is ‘safer’ at the mo
There are no plans to relocate, ………..
………….
Other than that there are no plans that I know of.There’s nothing to worry about 😉
mostly right. She is safer where she is for now, and there are no IMMEDIATE plans to move her 😉

Any news on the future of XR724? Are the plans to relocate her still ongoing?
Hi, at present she’s stopping where she is. She is ‘safer’ at the mo
There are no plans to relocate, the ‘proper’ job is way to big and expensive, taking a Lightning apart, moving and rebuilding it back to ‘running’ is not for the faint hearted and ‘shallow of pocket’

I’d just like to wish the people involved with the possible relocation of this girl the best of luck with the move. I am sure there would be no shortage of both skilled and unskilled personel who frequent this forum that would offer their help free of charge. I would gladly help, and probably know a few others (all serving RAF members, like myself) who’d give up their time to help rehome this lightning.
Should a plan come together, please PM me and I’m there!

I understand that the Defence School of Transport (DST) are trying to find a suitable display aircraft for RAF Leconfield. Can anyone recommend a suitable airframe (Lightning or Hunter)?

Sad indeed if the base goes but the Spirit of Binbrook will carry on in the form of XR724!

Is Binbrook finally about to vanish then?? 🙁 I’d love a look around there, I know 320psi said it’s a sorry sight to behold now… 🙁

With regards preservation of xr724 i am going tomorrow to see charles and have a talk with him regarding what happens next.
We discussed several options over the phone to where she should go and how she should be moved but i can say she wont be cut up to be moved.
I have spoken to a friend at Raf Waddington and he has offered to take time off personaaly to help dismantle 724 if it comes to this.
There is a lot of talk out there with people wishing to see her scrapped for useable spares and i can say this wont happen.
Will let people know what happens tomorrow and post some pics up as going round the base for some sigh seeing before the airfield finally vanishes.

Chinook Lift not an option
Refering to an earlier mention of a Chinook lift … may i just say that i have ‘friends in right places’ and i did take a serious look at this option on behalf of Charles thru Matty some while back.
At best, a Chinook can lift 8 metric tons but not very far so, for that reason alone, it was a non starter UNLESS lots of stripdown takes place.
I gather other plans are afoot and all i can say is that ‘Lakes Lightnings’ wishes you, whoever you are all the very best with the life support recovery of this fine living, breathing beast.

Peter
Thanks for the advice re 724 I will wait with baited breath for developments.
Chox
Re the Scampton thing, locals around Waddington seem to think they may relocate there, while still using the air over Scampton… As for the Hawks the Reds use I assume as they didn’t go onto the FRP line, they could use FRP a/c eventually
Sorry for changing the subject, ladies and gents but I cannot find time to repost that one elsewhere, job hunting you know….and the Hawk is getting older anyway….

With best wishes to all involved, as a shareholder in 724( 3 to be precise) it would have been nice to have been to have been kept up to date on what is actually happening as I have had no correspondance from the association or anyone else for a number of years now.I have e-mailed the Association website but to no avail, and this is the first info I have had about 724 in that time.
I hope the plans people are working on come to fruition but the 100 or so shareholders need to be kept informed as a courtesy I would have thought, even a message on forums would help.

Gentlemen,
Without going into details, there are plans currently in the works concerning the Lightnings future.
There have been several concerns over some of the discussions taking place on this thread that may jeopardize the hard work and planning that has gone into this project so far.
We all hold the aircraft close to our heart, myself included and we would like nothing better than to see her leave Binbrook sadly before the effects of time, weather and vandals cause irrepairable damage.
From now on,can we please respect the wishes of the aircrafts owners and lad’s that are working really hard on planning for her future? I am not saying that you can no longer post about the Lightning, but one of the concerned puts it better than me when he states and I quote:
I don’t want to spoil peoples right to comment or post in anyway, just for people to consider what they post on the thread before doing so, in light of current efforts. I do understand that people are passionate to see 724 shine, and so they should be..
