Evening all,
Okay I’m asking a lot I know..can anyone tell me what the bit of wreckage might have come from? Found on the Isle of Wight approx 12 years ago, precise location unknown.
Section of what looks to be a wing leading edge, tip portion, light alloy construction approx 12″ long..fag packet for scale!
Fitted with 2BA bolts etc so of Brit manufacture 40s / 50s vintage, dark blue- grey paint on upper surface. As can be seen the underside has an oval cut-out, looks to be a tie-down point..so maybe a naval type?
Stenciled on this is 8529.. or perhaps could that 8 be an S?…strange place for a serial, not that I can tie this up with anything likely. Part number on nose rib J 14A 20 along with FM KF inspection stamp.
Over to you guys..Chumpy.

Firefly wing tip
A couple of photos of a Firefly wing tip.
The part in question is a small portion of the tip.
cheers

It would be nice to hear if the information above was of any help.
Hi Tim,
Yup certainly of help!
HMS Vulture tells me that it is without doubt Firefly, stbd wing-tip, would look to be from a Mk4.
The stencil he reckons is a Fairey component number rather than a serial. I bow to his superior knowledge on this, as he has far more ‘time on type’ than me!
Would be interesting to know the fate of LS529…just in case!!!
Cheers, Chumpy.

Could it be LS529 a Fleet Air Arm Fairey Barracuda II built at Heaton Chapel and part of batch c/n F.6320-F.6719? The remains of Barracudas I’ve seen seem to have their airframe serials depicted on numerous components.

Yes from what I have been told via PM, certainly looks a bit Firefly-ish!
Any FAA experts out there who could explain the stenciling?
Many thanks for all the responses.
Cheers, Chumpy.

The inspection stamp FM was used by Fairey, I have seen it on Halifax parts that were made by Fairey.
from the colouring I would specualte at possibly being Firefly or a late Barracuda.
