Blackouts

For those of you who havent heard yet although i’m sure there are few of you, THere have been severe Blackouts in the North Eastern US (Detroit, Cleveland and New York to name a few) and in Eastern Canada (Toronto is the big one there)

Has this affected airtravel? What are flights looking like from where you all are? Where there any accidents?

Bizarre things happened today who knows?

No I don’t have anything against Celine Dion. I think she is actually a fine singer. However when someone opens the door I just can’t resist walking in.:p

I have travelled around a good portion of Canada in my life and have found you all up there to be good folks. I have some friends who live north of the border as well.

That said we the aforementioned noisy nieghbors to the south cannot and will not tolerate weapons of mass Dion. This is a threat not only to the U.S. but to the world as a whole. At this time coalition forces are gathering at the border and an invasion is imminent if you do not give up your weapons of mass Dion. Since you have used weapons of mass Dion in the past we must assume that you will use them again.

You have been warned.:D 😉 :p 😀

Canadians find Americans ignorant and big headed. I have nothing against the americans tho, i find them quite kind and friendly people! Someday the stereotype shall go away.

I’ve seen Canadian Bacon, very funny indeed I also saw Bowling For Columbine recently. Not entirely a comedy piece but a good examination of Canadian and US attitudes. As for sending Celine Dion out into the world, well that’s just cruel. But I’ll forgive you as you gave us Rush and Neil Young. Please take Avril Lavigne back ASAP though ! 😀

B777boy – hey amigo, nice to see another Calgarian on the world-wide-whatever. Good on you for your flying fortunes too.

Now, about this whole American-Canadian thing…

We Canucks generally like our American friends. They’re kind of noisy neighbors, but good to us. If they tick us off, we just send another Celine Dion-type entertainer south of the border to annoy them. It’s all good.

As to the Americans having a reputation for being aggressive, no worries. Remember, the last time they got frisky with us was around 1812 – we sent them packing. 😀

Want to know more about the Canadian/American thing? Rent the movie “Canadian Bacon.” Hysterical!

Hey Ren..
Us Brits love you scots…
We love anything that wears a skirt…..
😉

No seriously its just the same old stereotypes that are flung around by the few narrow minded idiots that inhabit our island that make it appear that the brits have it in for the Irish,Welsh and Scottish.
Not coming from the states I couldn’t really comment I can only assume its the same.

Flight situation update from CNN,

Air Canada has suspended all flights becasue main operating base is without power, United has cancelled over 500 flights. Various other airlines have suspended flights to New YOrk and other affected areas. Hate to be travelling today!

Isn’t there a great international perception (misconception ?) that Americans and Canadians don’t have much time for each other. Just like most people think the Scots hate the English and vice versa ? 😀

P.S. Before I start an international incident, please respond to this post with humourous intent. 😀

A good portion of the electricity used in the northeastern quadrant of the U.S. comes from the big hydroelectric projects in Canada. But it is a two way feed. Electricity generated south of the border is also sold to Canada. We all have just been given an object lesson in just how interdependant we are.

We will be hearing about what to do about all this for some time to come as well.

As a side note I really don’t belive Whiskey Delta was making a cheap shot at Canada. Who would think that a lightning strike ANYWHERE (Canada, U.S., East Overshoe whatever) could bring down a good portion of the power grid on the eastern portion of the North American continent.

Food for thought.

I hope that wasn’t a sarcastic remark. But what i don’t understand is why north eastern us and southern ontario share the same power grid?

Ya so an update on the cause, it was a power station in Southern Ontario, IT was struck by lightnong causeing an overload and then the domino affect talked about earlier took out the eniter power grid consisting of some 30 power generators. Some areas are back with power right now with occasional rolling blackouts. Others are still without power and they could be for another day or so. Best of luck to anyone caught travelling in these areas!

a little bit of snow and the whole world grinds to a stop

I only wish that were really true. However when a little bit of snow falls, we the snowplow drivers of the world head out into the deepest darkest night just so people can complain that we drive to slow and we are in their way.

We don’t get “snowday’s”:(

Oh poo;) 😀

It’s amazing that the most powerful country of the world has such a poor power grip.

After the CA fiasco a couple of years ago , I hope this will not give some ideas to the terrorists 🙁

Good point, I have this feeling that after this whatever cascading events caused this will be changed for the future. For what ever reason when a main power plant goes down in one area it can pull down others in the same grid. I doubt they thought it would pull down an entire grid though.

I think the emergency plan for a nuclear power plant is to park the control rods shutting down the reactor. Rather than try to maintain enough entering power to control the cooling process it’s just safer to bring the plant down until the power grid is back up.

Here they use electricity to run pumps to supply fresh water for the city from Lake Erie. When the power went down they couldn’t pump in water and the city started running out of reserves in a matter of hours. Even with the power returning, parts of the city are without power AND water. Man does that suck. Thank goodness I leave outside of that area.

How could a fault at one sub-station cause such widespread problems? And why were 9 nuclear power stations shut down? I can see the point of the airports having emergency power only to essential services, that makes sense, but wouldn’t other areas such as nuclear power stations have emergency back up as well?

You wouldn’t need many of those power cuts to bring the whole of North America into chaos. Glad things are getting back to normal.
