Blackpool Airport

I just booked myself a return flight to Blackpool with Ryanair from Stansted for May 5th. I’m going up out of curiosity really. I stayed at the hotel at Blackpool Airport a few years back but nothing seemed to really happen at the airport other than a few GA movements.

Has anyone flown from Blackpool? What are the facilities like? I’ll post some photos when I get back.

I’ve also just found out that the flight might possibly be operated by a Buzz BAe 146, can anyone confirm this?

Thanks,

Martin

it was just on our local tv news show, passengers flying out of Blackpool yesterday and today STILL had to pay £10 (i think) airport development duty or tax…

Nobody from the airport’s authority was available for comment !!!!!

Word on the street is, the operating company as referred to above is closing down. ATC and the Fire Section staff are being made redundant. The ILS and NDB will be switched off. The aerodrome license is being withdrawn, so, no more commercial flights. The airfield will remain in use as an unlicensed aerodrome, so non-commercial aviation can continue. I.e. Flying training, private flights.

Don’t know what is happening with Bond Offshore who service the platforms in the Morecambe Bay / North Eastern Irish Sea area as it is classed as a commercial op. Same goes for based the Air Ambulance.

It will shut for a short time and then re open for GA with the terminal closed.

Wonder what effect this will have

To blackpool i fear little or none, possably only subsidising services that are already operating perhaps? By this i am meaning the IOM and Belfast routes if they were ever in danger of having to close – i personally dont know how well these routes perform.

I think Blackpool’s future will be linked to any casino development – if the gambling laws get changed and a large casino (as already proposed) gets the go ahead and it built on the sea front, this could be a significant draw for Blackpool in its own right. Until that happens, I can’t really see that much growth as MAN and LPL are a bit too close.

Any expansion at Blackpool would probably be constrained by the length of the runway and proximity of local buildings. In my opinion the Ryanair service is a good addition, but I think it was introduced along with the Newquay service for Londoners taking holidays just as much as for the local population. Liverpool and Manchester have far bigger catchment areas and are more prominent, though Blackpool does well with Irish Sea traffic (Isle of Man, Belfast City, Dublin etc).

I don’t think the FlightSim show is going to bring any Internatioanl routes Andrew, unless you mean a one off Dublin charter flight! J-Max air have a Falcon 900 and a BAe 125 based there, but as EGNM says, why Blackpool!
